The Asian Poker Tour (APT) continues to up the ante for poker in Vietnam with the APT Vietnam Ho Chi Minh Main Event VND 6 Billion GTD Championship currently underway. The marquee event pulled in a record participation of 499 players that collected an astounding VND 9.68 Billion (~₹2.87 Crores) in prize money. And just as a big team of Indian players is about to return from Las Vegas after a spectacular performance at the 2018 World Series of Poker (WSOP), several Indians including Young Gun Devesh Thapar (cover image), Sumit Sapra, and Ravi Priya were seen in action in the Main Event that is being hosted at the tour’s partner and host venue Pro Poker Club.

A total of 53 players have advanced to Day 3 of the event that will play down to the eight-handed final table today. It is going to be a big day for Young Gun Devesh Thapar (547,000) who will be returning to the felts with the third largest stack. In 2017, Thapar took down the second edition of PokerBaazi’s flagship online MTT tournament, ‘The MoneyMaker’ ₹1 crore GTD event and is now in contention for the top prize of VND 1.63 Billion (~₹48.40 Lakhs) at the APT Vietnam HCM Main Event Championship.

The championship saw three starting flights. While the Day 1A attracted 100 entries and 37 survived to Day 2 with Vietnamese player Dang Xuan Canh (193,000) claiming the top stack, a total of 118 players flocked the Day 1B flight and after 29 re-entries, the number rose to 147. Of them, 60 players bagged chips for Day 2 and Malaysian player Choong Kian Weng (172,000) held the biggest stack.

From the Indian contingent, Sumit Sapra (93,000) and Ravi Priya (45,000) crossed the challenges of Day 1B, while Devesh Thapar (105,100) was among the top ten stacks among the 107 survivors from the Day 1C flight. The last starting flight had drawn a huge, 252-strong player field and Kang Suuk Hyun (190,900) from Korea bagged the largest stack just short of the Day 1A chip leader Canh.

As 203 players resumed play on Day 2, Thapar (547,000) advanced to Day 3 along with 52 others, while Sapra and Priya fell out during the course of the play. Close to the bubble, Choong Kian Weng took over the chip lead after scooping a big pot.

The top 84 spots made it in the money and former APT champion Iori Yogo bubbled the event after his pocket jacks failed to catch up against the pocket kings of Frederic Bolliet.

Just as 81 players were left in the field, Thapar was spotted capitalizing. Thapar eliminated Bastien Blumenrother and then went on to scalp another player to chip up over 500,000. He held ace-nine that outdrew his opponent’s pocket sevens with the ace showing up on the board.

Day 3 of the Championship will begin at blinds of 3,000-6,000 with an ante of 1,000.
