On Thursday, August 4 the Captain of Ports (CoP) finally gave order for shifting of the MV Flotel to be moved away from the vicinity of the Chorao Island, which houses the protected Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary.

The move came after weeks’ long opposition by locals, politicians and environment activists, which included a meeting with Governor Mridula Sinha asking her intervention in the matter. The locals of Ribander, led by Aires Rodrigues, activist had even threatened to launch a state-wide stir, led by a one-day agitation on July 25, if the casino was not shifted.

Propelled by the protests and by a notice from the National Green Tribunal (NGT), Laxmikant Parsekar, Chief Minister finally gave an order on July 23 for the vessel to be moved away from the spot. CoP james Braganza admitted the order and said, “The department has directed the people concerned to shift the vessel on Friday morning.”

The Deltin Caravela, which operates out of the MV Flotel will now be moved nearer the other four offshore casinos at Betim. It had first been anchored in River Mandovi towards Brittona, but shifted to Chorao Island waters after residents had objected to it near their village.

The BJP-led Goa govt has been facing continued criticism over its alleged pro-casino stand in the state, with the above being one in a series of incidents over the past 18 months.
