EPT Barcelona 2018: Alexander Petersen Takes Down €10,300 PLO High Roller For €213,400

The two-day long €10,300 Pot Limit Omaha High Roller at the 2018 PokerStars European Poker Tour (EPT) Barcelona crowned a champion in Denmark’s Alexander Petersen (cover image). Outlasting a field of 80 entries, including 18 re-entries, Petersen was up against the likes of Dan Shak, Chris Dowling, Martin Kozlov and Niko Soininen on the final table. He bested them all to take home the prestigious trophy and top prize worth €213,400.

Ranked 20^th on Denmark`s All Time Money List, Petersen has posted more than ten scores to his name, accumulating in total live earning of about $1.2 Million.

While notables like Cary Katz, Ryan Riess, Stephen Chidwick and Sam Greenwood were seen in action, they busted before the money bubble burst.

The 17 survivors from Day 1 returned to the felts for the final day and following eight more eliminations the final table was set up.

With only the top 11 places receiving payouts, the runners who made it in the money but failed to make the final table included Cord Garcia (10^th for €19,400) and Murad Akhundov (11^th for €19,400).

Meanwhile, the participants who busted empty-handed featured the likes of Alex Lindop, Ville Mattila, Samuli Sipila, Yevgeniy Timoshenko, Laszlo Bujtas and Felix Stephensen.

Final Table Recap

The first from the nine-handed final table to depart was Hon Cheong Lee, when he raised 56,000 from the hijack and Anson Tsang 3-bet to 192,000 from the button. Lee called all-in and both players tabled their cards.

The flop offered some outs to Lee for a chop. The turn brought the possibility for a flush draw, but the river did not improve Lee’s hand and he was eliminated in ninth place.

A few orbits later, Tsang raised to 40,000 and Dan Shak called to see a flop open . Tsang bet 55,000 and Shak raised to 275,000. Tsang moved all-in and Shak called tabling against Tsang’s . Both had flopped a flush draw, but Tsang had a pair to go along with it. The remaining two streets brought and that did not provide much help to Shak, leading to his eighth-place elimination.

Less than an hour later, Tsang was involved in yet another elimination. He raised the pot to 50,000 from under-the-gun and Chris Dowling 3-bet for 186,000. Tsang checked the other stacks at the table and gave it some thought before calling. The flop came . Tsang bet the pot and Dowling called all in.

Tsang took the lead as he had flopped two pairs and an open ended straight draw. With the next two board cards revealing and , Tsang completed a straight, while Dowling was railed in seventh place.

Next up was the double elimination of Martin Kozlov and Seamus Cahill. Kozlov raised the pot for 105,000 from under-the-gun and Tsang 3-bet to 350,000 from the button, while Cahill called all-in for 295,000 from the big blind. Kozlov tanked for a while and then called.

The community cards fanned out . Since Kozlov and Cahill did not have spades in the hand, Tsang scored the double knockout with a nine-high straight. Kozlov was eliminated in sixth place, while Cahill took the fifth spot.

About seven minutes later, Tsang raised from small blind with and Niko Soininen moved all-in from big blind holding . Tsang called and the board spread out . Tsang hit a full house on the turn, whilst Soininen’s rivered inferior full house sent him packing in fourth place.

Down to three-handed play, Alexander Petersen raised to 60,000 from the button and Panagiotis Sotiriadis called from the big blind. The was dealt on the flop, Sotiriadis checked and then called a bet of 65,000. After the was revealed on the turn, Sotiriadis check-raised all in for 445,000 and Petersen called. Sotiriadis pitted his against Petersen’s . The on the river missed both players and Sotiriadis was sent packing in third place.

The heads-up confrontation between Anson Tsang (1,775,000) and Alexander Petersen (2,225,000) began with the latter in the lead. Petersen kept increasing his lead while Tsang tried his best to catch up. On the final hand of the event, Petersen raised to 80,000 and Tsang 3-bet to 240,000. Petersen 4-bet to 720,000 and Tsang called with another 440,000 behind to see the flop . Tsang checked, and Petersen promptly moved all in. Tsang tanked for quite some time but ultimately called with the word “backdoor backdoor,” having previously mentioned he had no spades in his hand.

The on the turn left Tsang drawing dead and that made the river inconsequential. Tsang’s compelling run ended in the runner-up place, as Petersen claimed the trophy and first-place prize money of €213,400.
