PokerStars is witnessing another upheaval in its pro roster, with a new sign up and a termination. The latest poker pro to be snapped up by the site is Jason Somerville (cover image), who has created a cult following for himself on YouTube and Twitch. On the other hand, news has come in about the end of the tie-up between Spanish online poker pro Vicente Delgado and PokerStars.

Jason Somerville Joins Team PokerStars Pro

Jason is an accomplished player, with a WSOP bracelet and more than $6 million in accumulated live and online earnings. His achievements have earned him a respect akin to that accorded to the likes of Daniel Negreanu.

The last 18 months, Jason has been streaming live videos on the top channels, which have earned him a large fan following. Following this success, PokerStars decided to add him to their elite list of Team pros.

PokerStars released a press statement saying, Jason Somerville represents the latest generation of poker pros, raised on American poker television and video game culture. The young American has parlayed his poker passion into a successful Twitch feed, where fans watch his real-time play, commentary and strategic advice on the popular video platform and game community.”

PokerStars also announced the launch of its official Twitch channel, at the same time. This channel will stream educational and entertaining content from several other members of Team PokerStars Pro. Jason will continue to contribute with his ‘Run it UP!’ series, Season 3, starting Sunday March 1 at twitch.tv/pokerstars.

Jason stated that, “I’m delighted to become a member of Team PokerStars and can’t wait to resume my Run It UP! series on Twitch. I’ll be live streaming for several hours this coming Sunday and I can’t wait to hear from, and chat to, a growing group of poker fans as the broadcasts continue.”

Vicente Delgado Terminates Contract with PokerStars

While, Jason signed up eagerly with PokerStars, Spanish poker player Vicente Delgado chose to terminate his contract, to follow his passion for playing more global poker. According to recent news, the player chose not to renew the contract with the site, after its expiry early Feb.

Delgado had joined the site, after Spain’s Javier Domínguez “Thalai” had left it in Feb 2014. The player had achieved Supernova Elite status at PokerStars.es in 2013.

Today I am saying goodbye to PokerStars as I decided not to renew my sponsorship contract for 2015.” Delgado stated. Explaining further he added, “The truth is that had I great expectations for growth in the Team Pro, and those expectations have not been met. I realize that marketing in this sector has changed significantly compared to previous years, and Team Pros no longer carry the same importance as before. Being on PokerStars entailed many responsibilities and hours of work that prevented me from fulfilling other objectives that I had in mind.”

Delgado has also underlined this termination with his quest to play and gain further international recognition. To date the pro has made some impressive finishes that include 19th place in the 2015 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure $ 25,000 buy-in High Roller event for $ 69,720, a 7th place in the Estrellas Poker Tour (ESPT) Main Event in Madrid, and a 3rd place at the ESPT High Roller in Valencia. He also won the High Roller event at the 2014 World Championships of Online Poker for $637,436. Delgado’s live tournament winnings stand at $177,348.

The pro believes that staying with PokerStars would not help him in gaining the growth he is seeking. He states, “You have to be consistent in your work and continuously adapt to others. This requires studying and the ability to constantly change your game. Consistency and hard work are the key. You need to be mentally prepared because if you do not understand how the game and its fluctuations work, you are far from playing your best game.”

With Delgado’s departure, Catalonian Leo Margets remains the sole member of PokerStars Spanish Team.

Other Changes

This parting comes close on the heels of Xuan Liu parting ways with 888poker, whose tie-up had lasted a year, just as Delgado’s.

Last year, another pro Victoria Coren-Mitchell chose to terminate her contract with PokerStars in protest against their casino games offerings.

On the Asian front too, there seem to be changes, with Raymond Wu missing this year from the Team PokerStars Asia Pro Team.

Two new additions can be seen though, with India’s first Team PokerStars Pro Aditya Agarwal and Japan`s Kosei Ichinose.
