He’s a natural at the poker tables and effortlessly combines aggression with the skills he’s acquired over the years, and the training he has received from India’s poker pioneer, Aditya ‘Intervention’ Agarwal.

But what Kartik Ved`s (cover image) resume lacked was a first-hand experience at the World Series of Poker (WSOP), a dream that he fulfilled this summer, after an offer from Agarwal to partner with him in the ‘Tag Team’ event that he couldn’t refuse. Ved’s sweat at the challenging Main Event landed him in 128th place and he banked $57,010 (~₹39.20 Lakhs) to make his career-best score and enter the elite group of Indians to have made such a deep run at the prestigious event.

A trainer himself, having joined Abhishek Jalan and Vikram Kumar’s AceJack poker stable to guide upcoming players, the firebrand player who lives in Mumbai has a strong MTT experience and is a regular at online tournaments. With exposure of WSOP added to his score he has now turned his attention to the upcoming APPT Manila and EPT Barcelona scheduled for August.

On his way back to India, Ved spoke to PokerGuru on his WSOP debut and his memorable run in the Main Event. Read the excerpts here.

Hello Kartik and thank you for speaking with PokerGuru. Congratulations on your deep run in the WSOP Main Event. How was the experience?

The WSOP Main Event was filled with different emotions throughout the 5 days I managed to survive. The experience was amazing, I got to play with a lot of online/live MTT crushers at my table.

You had a pretty swingy event with lots of ups and downs. Views?

I had decided to play more spots with a high variance. My tables were always very tough and active. Thus, the swings.

Your immediate reaction after elimination?

My elimination happened at the feature table so I chose to control my emotions but did feel shattered from inside and had to tell myself that the dream is over.

Please tell us about the Indian rail and how did they support you in the grind?

I received a lot of messages via all social media platforms from the poker community. Definitely generated a lot more hunger in me to go further in the tournament.

What are your views on the Main Event and WSOP in whole?

Every poker player must go and play the Main Event at least once in their life. It’s the most beautiful tournament in the world. WSOP Main Event is an experience in itself.

This is your first WSOP trip, was it only grind or did you do some recreational activities? Any fun instances or experiences you would like to share?

Only grinded throughout the short trip.

How has been your overall experience in Vegas?

Overall experience became much smoother with the assistance of Adi (Aditya Agarwal) and Shuchi (Chamaria) around me always. They would generally take me around the city.

What are your views on the impressive performance put up by Indian’s at the series?

I strongly believe we can be at the levels of German players if we work harder in the next few years. Congrats to Nikita Luther on getting India another gold. Huge sweat for Rughani and Nishant in the Main, final table bubble for Sushi (Aditya Sushant) in One Drop and 2nd in the Closer for Paawan. We are going to conquer the WSOP in a few years.

You have been mentored by Aditya (Adi) Agarwal and we have heard you planned your trip because of him. What has been your biggest takeaway from Adi’s sessions? Do you think the lessons helped you during the WSOP grind?

Yeah, Adi (Aditya Agarwal) told me he will play the teams event with me if I take the next flight. Do I really have a choice after he says that?

Adi’s coaching has helped me to become a better, fundamentally sounded player with lesser mistakes in the past 1 year, not only the WSOP. Adi always tells us to ask ourselves “did you play your hand in the best way possible or not, that’s all that matters.”

What are your plans with the bankroll boost you just got? What are your plans for the rest of the summer?

I plan to travel to APPT Manila now and EPT Barcelona in August.

Any parting words or anything you would like to add?
