The 2017 Star Sydney Championships $3,000 Main Event ($1 million guaranteed) is now in the books. Besting the 496-player field was Henry Tran (cover image) who walked away with AU$300,000, which is around five times his total live winnings prior to this win.

There were 54 places paid, and Australia’s most famous poker brothers Tony Hachem and Joe Hachem both managed to make it in the money.

Tony was the first to fall getting eliminated after the bubble when he got unlucky with jacks against pocket eights. Former world champion Joe, ran deeper by making it into the final 14 but unfortunately busted just two spots before the unofficial final table of seven players. He shoved holding pocket fives and got one caller in Damon Zhou who woke up with pocket aces behind him. Hachem was unable to improve and exited the Main Event in ninth place.

Tran managed to get a huge double up right before the official final table and came into the final table second in chips trailing only Brad Hawkins.

Final Table Recap

Chris Tran was the first to fall followed by Suzy Khoueis who took the sixth spot.

Hawkins then won a flip with pocket nines against the ace-king of one of the toughest players on the table Grant Levy, to send him out in fifth place.

Rafe Aman was the shortest stack and took fourth place while Damon Zhou hit the rail in the third place with Hawkins making another kill to set up the heads-up battle. Tran started with an almost 10-1 chip disadvantage but managed to bridge the gap shortly.

Tran’s were up against of Hawkins but he got to see a dream flop of to take down the pot. Shortly thereafter, Tran found another double up when on the board, Hawkins raised holding while Tran shoved holding , Hawkins called and missed on the river and now both players were even in chips.

From hereon, Tran took over the lead and ended it all shortly. The last hand of the event saw both players moving all-in after having a brief talk. Tran showed and Hawkins tabled . The board ran the and Tran took it all.

Incidentally, Tran wasn’t even planning to play the event but after his sixth-place finish in the Monster Stack event he decided to take the shot.

Tran after the win said, “It feels unreal. I am so happy. This is a great event, it has such an excellent structure. I really like deep stack poker and this tournament is perfect for that.”
