The march goes forward, as the inevitable final few days of the Main Event are yet to unfold. Suspense is building up and every new day sees many disappointed players returning to the rails, as well as hopefuls, who have survived. Let us look at the moments that dot Day 3 of the main event where the starting field of 1,864 players was chopped down to only 746, just 53 spots away from cash.

Aditya Agarwal has been tweeting regularly and here we bring you important snippets of his table, as the event progressed.

At the start of the day, Aditya found himself facing a tough table, with defending champion Ryan Reiss there. After hand 1, he had collected 200K. However, after reaching 220K, Aditya confesses to reaching a rough patch, and coming down to 170K. Aditya goes on to describe his startling downward spiral, as he was left with 184K and lost another 200K in 15 minutes. Returning from break with 75k, at the lowest ever, Aditya affirms his belief in not giving up and moves to the Amazon room, with 85k. Here begins his upward journey, as he moves from 150K, to 270K with 50 minutes left and finally ends the day with 235,000 chips.

Apoorva Goel is another fellow Indian to survive, with 39,500 chips. Among many Indian origin players, Raj Vohra is at 24th place, with a pile of 745,000. Ankush Madavia has accumulated 626,000 and Mukul Pahuja had 48,7000 chips.

Day 3 began with Phil Ivey leading the chip stack, among the remaining players, all vying for the big prize. However, Phil could not hold on to his precarious position and by the end of Day 3, Andrew Liporace had taken the lead from him, with a stack of 1,128,000, while Phil was relegated to 72nd place. Phil’s earlier broad smile had transformed into a ghastly frown. Just goes to show, how the game can turn around within minutes!

Last year Day 3 chip leader, Mark Kroon finished 458th in the final list. Julian Gardner was the luckiest, when he reached 2nd place in the Main event in 2002, after being chip leader on the same day. The only lady pro, who was chip leader on Day 3 and came closest to the top finishes, was Gaelle Baumann, who made it to 10th place in 2012. No woman has ever bettered Baumann’s pace, though this year Mikiyo Aoki has reached 104th spot at the end of Day 3, with her stack of 460,500.

Speaking of Day 3, the same day last year had almost similar figures with 1,753 players, being whittled down to 666, leaving the bubble to burst the next day. This year, much the same has happened with 746 players left at the end of the day and the money bubble set at the 693rd player.

Another record for this year may belong to Ronnie Bardah, who is gunning for the money list, in order to become the first player to record five consecutive WSOP Main Event cashes. Currently Ronnie shares his four cashes record, with Christian Harder, Chris Bjorin, Chris Overgard, Theodore Park, Robert Turner and Bo Sehlstedt.

Chip counts are the main stays of any tournament, as any player will tell you. While Andrew Liprace made it to the top at the end of the day, it was Mehrdad Yousefzadeh, who actually crossed the million mark first. However, Yousefzadeh was felled by a single big blind from Andrew and remained with 1,124,000 as the second chip leader of the day.

The day had started with many famed players participating, with huge expectations from them. Notable was NBA superstar Paul Pierce, who had all eyes and cameras trained on him. Though he had managed to garner all the interest, Pierce failed to garner the chips and lost out. For Pierce, the money was not the attraction, but rather, the need for credibility as a poker pro. On hopes of getting a prize, the footballer said, “It would be great, (however) It’s showing me how far I’ve come over the years as a poker player and learning the game. It’s more than the cards. You have to endure the atmosphere. You have to endure a lot of things when you come to a big tournament like this.

Besides the pro footballer, there were five Main Event Champions, Johnny Chan, Chris Moneymaker, Robert Varkonyi, Ryan Riess and Huck Seed, with only Seed lasting to go on to the next day.

Others to exit included John Hennigan, Christina Lindley, Marvin Rettenmaier, Haralabos Voulgaris, Steven Dannenmann and Kyle Cartwright.

Despite these exits, a number of pros are still in the fray and will gather again for Day 4 of the event.
