WSOP 2018: Ognyan Dimov Wins Maiden WSOP Gold Bracelet in $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em 6-Handed For $378,743

The $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em 6-Handed at the 2018 World Series of Poker (WSOP) found yet another maiden WSOP gold bracelet winner in Ognyan Dimov (cover image). Competing against 1,663 entrants, the Bulgarian ran tremendously well to outlast four former bracelet winners, Yue Du,Ryan D’Angelo,Nick Schulman andJoey Weissman on the final table to win the coveted top prize of $378,743 and the third gold bracelet for his country.

The Bulgarian Dimov, ranked 4th in the Bulgaria All Time Money List, started playing poker in 2014. He won his first live title at the EPT Deauville Main Event in 2015 for $613,193. He has since gone on to accumulate total live earnings of $1,448,048.

The Indian poker maverick Aditya Agarwal ran deep in this event, finishing at 133rd place for $2,615 (₹1.76 Lakhs). He previously placed 77th in the $1,500 No Limit Hold’em (Event #13) for $3,517 (₹2.35 Lakhs). He is currently playing the $1,500 MILLIONAIRE MAKER event. Agarwal is a stalwart of the Indian poker scene and had a phenomenal run at the Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) Macau this year, where he was runners-up in the Main Event for career best $242,211. This poker star, who has total live earning of $958,101, will also be spearheading the Kolkata Creators team at the inaugural season of Global Poker League (GPL) India.

Bart Lybaert (8th place for $44,750), Hon Cheong Lee (12th place for $25,342) and Pierre Calamusa (13th place for $25,342) narrowly missed the final table. Other notable eliminations included Adrian Mateos (61st place for $4,608), Martin Jacobson (64th place for $4,608) and Jeff Madsen (78th place for $3,984).

Final Day Recap

The six-player final table included Ryan D’Angelo, Yue Du, Ognyan Dimov, Nick Schulman, Antonio Barbato and Joey Weissman. Weissman led the chip count with 3,683,000, followed by Dimov with 2,560,000 and D’Angelo with 2,350,000.

The first elimination of the day was Yue Du. Du check-raised and then went all-in from the big blind against Nick Schulman who called from the button. The board ran giving Schulman a two pair with . Du failed to hit his flush draw with and was ousted in sixth place.

Joey Weissman was the next to go in fifth place. Weissman went all-in from cutoff with pocket queens against Dimov’s . The rundown revealed , resulting in Dimov hitting a spades flush and Weissman going home.

On the 76th hand, Dimov went all-in with prompting Ryan D’Angelo to go all-in from cutoff with . But Dimov was able to improve his hand after the community cards showed , sending D’Angelo to the rails in fourth place.

The very next hand led to Nick Schulman’s departure in third place. Schulman had limped in from small blind and was forced to go all-in with when Dimov shoved with . Dimov’s dream run continued as the board fanned out giving him two pairs of aces and eights whilst Schulman busted.

Schulman’s elimination set up the heads-up match between finalists Antonio Barbato and Ognyan Dimov. On the final hand, holding , Barbato moved all-in and Dimov called tabling . Barbato was gunning for a gutshot straight draw but the showdown went in Dimov’s favour giving him two pairs of kings and sixes and leaving Barbato with the runners-up prize.

When asked about his views on the final table line-up, Ognyan Dimov said, “I read up on all of the players. Of course, you don’t expect to face bad players on the final table, that’s what you expect, bracelet winners and big names in poker. I am not afraid of that. I tried to stay calm and felt good playing. Obviously, everyone saw that I ran pretty amazing, but you have to run like this to win a tournament. I can’t complain.”
