For most of this year, I have been extraordinarily lazy/occupied and until recently I wasn’t playing enough at all.
Thankfully for the last week or so I have been putting in decent volume and playing around 20 tourneys a day.I definitely want to up that number to at least 30 or 40 soon. The increased volume I’m putting in and some changes and improvements I’ve made in my game have helped enormously and I have been having lots of deep runs and big stacks everyday. I FINALLY shipped a tournament a couple of days ago- a small $2 Re-buy for $3600!! It isn’t much, but combined with some other scores I finally do have the online Bankroll to play many of the higher buy-in events.
A few observations I have made in the past few days, in no particular order:
A) Short-stack play in turbo tournaments especially at low buy-ins operates in a rather strange manner. People often have such hilariously sub-optimal ranges that you have fold equity even with effective stacks of 3 or 4 Big Blinds. This kind of play allows you to wait for a better spot much longer than I had been doing in the past. Toning down my pre-flop shoves and starting them slightly later has worked wonders for my performance.
B) I have realized the importance of bet sizing a lot. If you size your bets right, you get a lot more value from monster hands, especially against weak players. In particular, people who don’t do this a lot should consider over-shoving up to 2x the pot (and even more against terrible players) with monster hands on the river when you are deep-stacked and it is not possible to go all-in with natural betting. In the typical online tourney, people manage to find calls with all kinds of junk.
C) I am amazed at how easy it is to play without a Heads up Display (HUD). My software hasn’t been working for a while, but I have realized that it doesn’t really make much of a difference and I am still able to categorize and adapt to players well even without a HUD.
I’m really looking forward to shipping plenty of tourneys online and also to having a good run at the PGT. I was slightly annoyed to see my name listed in the “dark horse” category in the predictions and I am gonna do everything I can to win a couple of tourneys and upgrade that ASAP!! Good luck everyone and I hope to see you guys at PGT.
