The first ever ANZPT Repechage Champion has been crowned. Anthony Hachem has taken home the title and the $181,460 prize.
There were 884 entries into the ANZPT Repechage, over three day one flights. This is the biggest ANZPT by player numbers ever held with 598 unique players taking part to build the $844,000 prizepool.
Anthony was chip leader on Day 1A and managed to stay up near the top throughout the tournament. Australia is very used to a Hachem winning. Anthony’s uncle, Tony Hachem has twice won the ANZPOY and his father, Joe Hachem is the most famous poker player in Australia. They were both on hand to see their prodigy take home his first major title. In fact he has done something his famous dad is yet to achieve, winning a major poker tournament here in his home town of Melbourne.
After winning Hachem said, “I am so happy to have done won here at Crown Melbourne with all family here to support me.”
Second place was Japan’s Iori Yogo ($126,600), remarkably this is Iori’s second 2nd place having achieved the same feat in Perth. He also has an 11th place finish in Sydney. This means Yogo is now out in front of the ANZ Play of Year leader board but with two events to play and with a host of great players vying for the title there is still some drama to played out in this year’s point race.
The heads up battle between Hachem and Yogo was a drawn out affair. Anthony was ahead in chips the whole way but the experience of Iori meant he had to be very wary. The final hand saw a very short stacked Iori put his last chips into the middle holding King nine suited. Anthony quickly called and revealed ace queen off suit. The board threatened to bring Iori’s flush but it was not forthcoming and Anthony Hachem became the inaugural ANZPT Repechage Champion.
