Can’t imagine folding river ever, against a lunatic (40/30) in a $3 tourney. I know he shouldn’t have anything u beat here the way this board runs out, but in a $3 tourney against someone running like this, I would just put it in because logical reasoning really won’t explain many of the hands he will show you.
Bet/fold is pretty terrible, because if you aren’t gonna call the shove this has become a bluff, because what do you expect him to call you with? All the draws hit and a Jack now beats you…
Check/fold is just laughable against someone like this in a $3 tourney because so many random garbage hands will bet.
Check/call has its merits and is certainly better than the line you took.
Personally bet small to induce (As you did) and then not finding the fold button seems quite ok to me, because a retard in a $3 tournament will bluff-jam this river to rep a jack a lot against your weak-looking bet.

I am just check calling the river because, after leading out 2 streets if I check on the river ,, it gives him an opportunity to bluff and also gives us an opportunity to keep the pot small and call his bluff. When we bet all 3 streets, he is never trying to bluff that river imo, unless he is that tricky and thinks he can make us fold exactly the kind of hand that we have. I would be more inclined to calling his river jam, if, the flop had a FD/SD. Then there is a reason to believe that he could do this with a busted draw. But, I think its just not worth risking your tourney life, and a decent stack in such a marginal spot.
Also, 17 hands is just nothing to base his range on. He is BIG stack , probably getting a card rush/trying to just open every pot till he faces resistance etc etc. If you have seen him showdown real crap, just maybe you can call here, but its a fold imo.
