This Week in Poker: September 9 – 15

In the PokerGuru feature ‘This Week in Poker’ we bring to you the weekly round up of the biggest online scores by Indian MTT players along with the top stories from both the live and online poker circuit.

Here are this week`s top stories

A super-hectic week saw action at both fronts, live as well as online. The MPC 23 finally concluded, witnessing a continued impressive performance by Team India, with several cashes by our players and a win by Dhaval Mudgal and Akash Malik in the Teams Event.

In further live events, we now have the presently underway WPT National Jeju Challenge from Sep 13 – 18, PokerStars Manila Megastack III, which will run from Sep 23 – 29 and APT Asian Series Manila from Sep 29 – Oct 7.

On the domestic front, the India Poker Championship Oct edition is barely three weeks away and daily online satellites are currently underway at SpartanPoker.com.

At the virtual felts, several scores were seen and of these Sabyasachi ‘infusion_leo’ Chakraborty tops the charts to take the “PokerGuru Star of the Week” title.

In other news, we have three important reports from India itself, covering Sikkim, Maharashtra and Goa. After that we cover the APPT Australia announcement, the Californian bill and the HPT Main Event report.

Sabyasachi ‘infusion_leo’ Chakraborty is our “PokerGuru Star of the Week” for an accumulated $7,506 in cashes this week.

Saby hit two big scores on Wed, Sept 9 and both at PokerStars. He first made 1st place for $4,961.19 at the ‘$11+R NL Hold’em, $7.5K GTD’. Next he made a 2nd place finish for $2,545.00 in the ‘$27 NL Hold’em [Turbo, Knockout], $10K GTD’.

Close behind on the cashes list was Arsh Grover, who continued his good online form and collected $5,184 for winning the PokerStars ‘The Big $33, $20K GTD’.

Other notable scores this week include-

Young Gun Raahil ‘rbhatia3’ Bhatia who won $2,330.70 for 10th place in the PokerStars ‘WCOOP 2nd Chance 26: $215 NL Hold’em’.

Rajesh_asi’ made 1st place for $1,753 in the PokerStars ‘$5.40 NL Hold’em [Turbo, Knockout], $10K GTD’.

Vinayak ‘Spine619’ Mahadev also made 1st place in the PokerStars ‘$5.40 NL Hold’em [Turbo, Knockout], $6K GTD’ for $1,206.37.

Sumit ‘boronyx’ Sapra, who is one of the 32 Spartan Bankroll challengers and was second on the Top 10 leaderboard this week, took 5th place in ‘The Hot $22 [Turbo], $15K GTD’ on PokerStars for $1,029.

The highly anticipated WCOOP took flight this week, but we are yet to witness any major cashes by our Indian players. It is early days yet and a schedule of 46 events is yet to unfold, including Event 69: $5,200 Main Event with its whopping $10 Million guarantee. A number of events have already seen winners emerge and the biggest payday to date was taken by UK player “V7JCV21“, who won $260,194 after beating 8,673 entries in the ‘WCOOP-04, $215 NL Hold’em [Sunday Million SE], $1.5M GTD’.

Online railbirds will also have another option with the India Extreme Giveaway at PokerStars, which will run from Sept 14 to Oct 4. The promo has over $8,000 in free prizes, including a trip to Macau for the ACOP. The promo will feature 42 freeroll tournaments, besides the India Extreme Giveaway Grand Final tournament, on Wed, October 7.

 

Macau Poker Cup (MPC) 23 Recap

MPC has over the last few editions emerged as one of Asia`s biggest events, and this time too the series delivered both in terms of numbers and prizepools. The series saw a record 4,429 players take part across the series, creating a total prizepool of HK $29,449,018. Team India certainly left an impact this MPC, with a string of cashes from the opening event itself.

Last week, the HK $12,000 Red Dragon Main Event and six side events played out, with Indians making numerous cashes. The highlight of the Indian performance was the win by Dhaval Mudgal and Akash Malik in the HK $4,000 Teams Event for HK $98,092, which had drawn 106 teams.

Team Thrill Pro Dhaval Mudgal was definitely the star of the series with a string of impressive cashes. After the Teams event win, he went on to make a 3rd place finish in Event 13 – HK $20,000 NLH for HK $335,200.

Kunal Patni made a 11th place in the same event for HK $71,200 and was the other player to shine this series. Patni already had made two final table finishes the week prior. He ended the series with another final table appearance in Event 17 – $2,500 Deepstack NLH where he made 7th place for HK $13,440.

Anju Abrol also cashed, making HK $7,150 for a 14th place finish in Event 14 – HK $3,000 NLH.

Event 15 – HK $80,000 Highroller was ultimately won by Taiwanese player James Ning Chen for HK $1,704,000, after beating 75 challengers.

The coveted HK $12,000 Red Dragon Main Event drew a summer-record crowd of 945 players and Yue Feng Pan was crowned champion and claimed the trophy along with the top prize of HK $2,108,000.

Betting Shops to Open in Sikkim

In a bonanza for sports betting lovers, the Sikkim govt has set in motion a new law to allow private operators to set up betting shops in the state, making it the first in India to do so. Three licenses have already been granted to operators and all major sports events will be available for betting.

The bill is expected to be notified soon, with the govt hoping to boost tourism and tax revenues from the initiative.

HC Official Letter Sent to Maharashtra State

The PIL filed by Jay Sayta in reference to an archived law of 1976 that allows casinos in Maharashtra saw movement, with the Bombay High Court sending an official letter to the state, seeking its reply within four weeks.

New Casino Hub At Vizag

If all legalities are completed and approved, Vishakhapatnam (Vizag) on the east coast of India could soon be a new casino hub for Indian players.

Several domestic and international operators have offered a plan to the state govt for the development of such a centre that would offer gambling activities, entertainment and nightlife.

It is believed that this hub could attract not only foreigners, but also the well-heeled Indian who has to travel either to Sikkim, Goa or to international destinations for such services.

APPT To Expand Footprint in Australia

Come 2016 and the APPT will be the sole brand playing out tournaments in Australia. The APPT will absorb the current ANZPT which will play out its last tournament in Adelaide this Oct.

The good news is that all ANZPT events will be incorporated into the APPT Aussie Millions in Jan 2016, with an additional event planned further down the same year.

 

California Online Bills Pushed to 2016

In a disappointment for online players, the California legislative assembly ended its last session on Sept 11, without any bill being passed on online gaming in the state.

The major cause of this has been reported to be the lack of any agreement between the two warring factions, with Amaya leading one and the Indian tribes on the other.

HPT Main Event Won By Jeremy Kloeckner For $142,836

The Heartland Poker Tour (HPT) Ameristar Casino Hotel East Chicago $1,650 Main Event found a champion in Jeremy Kloeckner, who took home the HPT championship bracelet and the $142,386 first-place prize. Kloeckner had barely $3,000 in earnings until this win and defeated 432 hopefuls at the event.
