Monday Motivation With Anmol Narang, Winner of Spartan Poker`s ₹1 Cr GTD ‘The Millionaire’
Making the cover of this week’s Monday Motivation feature is Anmol Narang, the winner of Spartan Poker’s flagship tournament, the ₹1 Crore GTD The Millionaire. Narang successfully navigated through a field of 1,864 participants to bag the title last night and take home ₹17.42* Lakhs (cumulative), his highest cash to date!
The 30-year-old from New Delhi has been regularly making deep runs without many titles, but he seems to have found the winning touch as this is his second flagship title on Spartan Poker in less than two weeks. He had last won the Mega Stack Millionaire Bubble on June 8 for ₹4.21 Lakhs.
Narang runs a factory for making corrugated boxes and informs us that he was introduced to poker by his cousin Puneet Dua, the first-ever Baazi Poker Tour Main Event champion and the COO of the fantasy platform BalleBaazi, while he was pursuing his graduation at Lovely Professional University.
Narang took to the game instantly and initially started off playing a lot of live cash games. He made the switch to online tournaments only recently during the pandemic and the subsequent lockdown.
When asked about his daily grind schedule and training methodology, he told us, “I mostly play the feature tournaments on Spartan Poker and PokerBaazi and usually start my grind by 8:30 PM in the evening and continue for however long the grind lasts. I bought some BBZ bundles for training and have been going through them regularly. I also did a few sessions with Arsh Grover a while back. I have also studied some online content by BenCB and a couple of other players that I really look up to.”
On prodding a little further on how he felt after taking down the title early this morning, Narang told us, “It felt amazing to win this prestigious title. I did not get time to play the entire weekend, so I planned to fire bullets in Day 1D and Day 1E flights. Luckily, I made a stack in both, ending Day 1D as the chip leader. That gave me a much-needed confidence boost, and I took it from there. The poker gods were kind, and it made an exceptional Sunday for me. Interestingly, the win reminded me of a quote I came across the internet that says: ‘The biggest thrill wasn’t in winning on Sunday but in meeting the payroll on Monday.’”
“The grind was long – I had started at 4 PM (on Sunday) and ended it by 5.15 AM (on Monday)! We tried to make a deal 3-way and then heads-up, but one of the players rejected the idea! I was nervous with the ICM and the heavy pay jumps for sure, but it all worked out in the end.”
When he asked him about his immediate reactions after such a landmark win, he said, “I immediately ran to my mom’s room and woke her up. She was super excited! I had even taught my mom to play poker during the lockdown, and she loves the game. She plays a few tournaments once in a while, which is super cool. My dad was thrilled as well. It was a good morning for all of us. I later woke up and called my sister first, and then a bunch of my friends called to wish me,” he adds.
With the lockdowns and curfews easing slowly across the country, we asked Narang about his future plans, especially given his affinity for live games. “I am definitely looking forward to playing live poker. It would be a dream come true to play the WSOP in the future, but I am still unsure about it for the time being. I need to put in a lot of work for that because I am nowhere close to the level that most of the crushers who represent India,” he said.
Talking to us about his favorite players, he added, “It’s mostly the usual suspects Arsh Grover, Gaurav Sood, but I always discuss hands with my brother Puneet Dua. In fact, he called me around 6 (PM) in the evening between my grind and said that he had a gut feeling that I would score big today! One of my closest friends, Kanav Parwal, was railing, and he was the first person who knew I shipped it.”
His advice for other players was on point, “Bankroll management is very important, you shouldn’t play out of your pocket, pay attention and play your strengths even if you have won a tournament and made money, stick to your strengths and bankroll.”
Congratulations to Narang, and now that he’s binked a flagship tournament, he has the opportunity to put his advice to work! It’s always great to see a new face win such marquee events, which definitely drives across the point that poker is everyone’s game.
