This Week in Poker: June 29 – July 5
In the PokerGuru feature ‘This Week in Poker,’ we bring you the weekly roundup of the most significant online scores by Indian MTT players and the top stories from both the live and online poker circuit. Here are this week’s top stories!
The last seven days seemed to have passed by faster than usual as the high-octane action both online and offline had us working overtime! The 2022 WSOP and PokerBaazi`s APT Online India series were the top themes this week.
With the world`s biggest poker spectacle, the 2022 WSOP, well underway, it’s only natural to begin the week’s top stories coming out of Las Vegas. It`s been a busy summer, and turnouts at the new home of the WSOP have pretty much been around to or exceeded records.
India is well represented at the annual this time with a sizable contingent of players in the bracelet race. Still, one player who has been genuinely crushing the series is our PokerGuru Ambassador Kartik Ved. The former bracelet winner made a close run to adding a second bracelet (his first in a live event) in Event #66: $1,000 Mini Main Event. He finished third for a massive $275,593 (~₹2.17 Crores) – the highest by anyone from India at the 2022 WSOP and the fourth-best score overall – making him an easy choice as our “PokerGuru Star of the Week!”
On a side note, Ved had a great start in the 2022 WSOP Main Event and headlines a group of 19 Indians to Day 2D.
Young Gun Neel Joshi, Nirav Parekh & India’s poker pioneer Aditya Agarwal raked in the other top scores from the team at the 2022 WSOP.
As for the online railbird report, Young Gun Anuj Yadav is almost guaranteed to extend his reign as the #1 ranked player of the year to a 20th consecutive week. The reclusive poker pro (we say reclusive because you won’t find him on any social media platform) pulled out one of his characteristic runs this week, winning two flagships and making another runner-up finish for a leaderboard topping ₹23.17 Lakhs.
Aayush Arya was another chartbuster who posted three podium place finishes (including a title win) for a cumulative ₹19.91 Lakhs.
PokerGuru Ambassador Ratul Steves, Young Gun Ujjwal Narwal, PokerGuru Ambassador Ashish Munot, and Ashish Nailwal were others who made quite the mark with their online exploits.
If PokerBaazi signing up Bollywood A-lister Shahid Kapoor was one of the top stories last week, the poker operator wasted very little time in launching a brand campaign ‘You Hold the Cards’ with its newly signed brand ambassador.
Spartan Poker, the other top poker platform in the country, seems to have taken it upon itself to ensure MTT players have the best experience on the site. On those lines, it has launched the all-new India Turbo Masters series. The fast-paced series will make its inaugural run from July 10 to 17 with ₹5 Crores GTD guaranteed across 50 action-packed tournaments and ₹10 Lakhs in leaderboard prizes.
The go-to site for the low to mid-stakes players, Pocket52 has a hectic July in store for tournament enthusiasts. Don`t take our word for it – log on to the site to check the list of 200-plus high-value tournaments with a jaw-dropping ₹3.40+ Crores in assured cash prizes.
Cash game players, while already enjoying lucrative promotions under the Cash Carnival on the Quadnet Poker Network (Spartan Poker and PokerHigh etc.), can also check out IndiaPlays. The upcoming site’s popular Progressive Leaderboard promotion is back this month and, like always, offers players a chance to win uncapped prizes.
In gaming news, the pending GST Council`s decision on the GoM proposed 28% GST across all gaming sectors was a much-awaited one by the industry and professional players alike. While the uniform 28% GST across casinos, horse racing, and online gaming (both skill games and those of chance) are verbally confirmed by insiders, the decision on the methodology adopted to value the services remains in debate. Moreover, objections by the Goa government over the tax on the purchase of chips and other activities inside the casino prompted the GST Council to defer a final decision on the matter to August.
Accusations of cheating were quite the rage, and several top names got embroiled in controversies before the WSOP arrived, distracting everyone from the hot topic. In the aftermath of the debate, online poker giants PokerStars and GGPoker seemed to have woken up to the issue of enforcing fair play and a way to punish anyone suspected of using unfair means by banning them from live events.
