WPT Prime India: Vineet Kumar Gets the Monkey Off His Back, Posts First Live Tournament Victory in ₹40K PLO (₹9.63 Lakhs)

It was a busy start to the weekend at the floating Casino Deltin Royale in Goa, with the poker room packed with tournament players from across the country and several foreigners, all vying to win the coveted WPT trophies at the ongoing WPT Prime India!

Like the day before, two tournaments played down to a winner yesterday. Vineet Kumar (cover image), who bagged the Day 1 chip lead in the ₹40K PLO, ended up going the distance. The only PLO format tournament on the schedule, the event saw PLO enthusiasts hoarding to sign-up, with 82 entrants generating a ₹29.85 Lakhs prize pool.

A well-known domestic circuit regular, Vineet Kumar barged through the reg-cluttered field to claim his maiden live title, banking a personal-best (live score) ₹9.63 Lakhs in first-place prize money.

Kumar has been around the circuit for a while, with his earliest recorded live tournament scores dating back to 2017. The veteran player has locked in several deep runs and FT finishes in the last six years. But the title victory was missing from his list of accomplishments.

He made two close runs to winning the WPT trophy at the WPT Prime Cambodia last month in Event #1: NagaWorld Supertsack and Event #26: Superstack Classic Freezeout. Both times, Kumar finished seventh place. However, there was no denying him the glory as cheered on by a supportive rail, he finally scored the win, extending the festival`s record of naming first-time winners.

Vineet Kumar bagged the chip lead on Day 1 of the PLO tournament among 14 survivors. The old timer finally got the monkey off his back last night by besting the former poker operator Vikram Kumar heads-up to lift the sought-after WPT trophy. Vikram Kumar settled for a runner-up payout worth ₹5.82 Lakhs.

The top 11 places were assured payouts. According to the live coverage, a foreign player named Adi money-bubbled the tournament in 12th place. Suresh O was eliminated in 11th place for ₹83,500, and Sanjeev Mohanty bubbled the final table, collecting ₹89,500 in 10th place.

Final Table Chip Counts

  1. Deepak Agarwal – 573,000
  2. Vikram Kumar – 390,000
  3. Gagandeep Malik – 320,000
  4. Mandar Darade – 230,000

  7. Sumukh K – 208,000
  8. Milena Mezhuieva – 171,000
  9. Siddharth Ranshevre – 70,000

Final Table Recap

Siddharth Ranshevre made a quick exit on the final table when his ran into Jagdeep Singh’s . The board opened , and Singh’s rivered boat knocked Ranshevre out in ninth place.

Mandar Darade was the next player to fall in eighth place. However, the elimination hand went unreported in the live coverage.

The former DPT High Roller champion and WPT title holder Gagandeep Malik’s bid to win a second WPT trophy ended prematurely. His came up against Vineet Kumar’s , but Kumar caught the better end of the runout , dismissing Malik in seventh place.

Soon after that, Vineet Kumar busted Sumukh K. The latter’s were no match for Kumar’s that hit a Queen-high straight on the board .

Finishing in fifth place was the lone woman on the final table, Milena Mezhuieva. In a classic cooler, Mezhuieva’s came up short of Vineet Kumar’s , with the board offering no succor to the former.

The following two eliminations went by quickly. Jagdeep Singh regarded as one of the best PLO players in the county, was sent packing in fourth place by Deepak Agarwal. However, Agarwal could not extend his stay on the final table for too long either and joined Singh on the rail ten minutes later after getting knocked out by Vikram Kumar in third place.

In a battle of the Kumars, Vikram ‘Lungi’ Kumar locked horns with the in-form Vineet Kumar. There is not a lot of information regarding how the heads-up played out. It seems Vikram started the heads-up as the shorter stack, and about 30 minutes later, he had whisked the chip lead away from Vineet. We do not have much detail on how Vineet fought back to gain the chip lead.

On the final hand of the tournament, Vikram Kumar’s lost out to Vineet Kumar’s , with the community cards opening .

We are nearing the midway mark for January, and so far, it’s been an action-packed month for online poker, thanks to the PokerBaazi Classics.

The year’s first mega-series had a plethora of big guaranteed tourneys, and unsurprisingly, this week’s “PokerGuru Star of the Week!” is the fifth Game Changer champion Sonu Shejpal! The relatively lesser-known players barged into the spotlight after overcoming a 3,870-strong entry field to capture a personal-best ₹25.45 Lakhs! He cut a four-way deal with Akshay Joshi (2nd for ₹20.34 Lakhs), Avish Sharma (3rd for ₹19.40 Lakhs), and Shivam Khandelwal (4th for ₹18.35 Lakhs), all of them featuring among the week`s chartbusters.

Young Gun Anuj Yadav, Siddharth Gangwar, and Vinayak Bajaj were the other top scorers of the week.

Even with the PokerBaazi Classics now in the rear-view mirror, players have much to look forward to throughout January, starting with PokerStars India’s Winter Series that went underway on January 11 and will run until January 16. On the heels of the Winter Series comes the 12th edition of Spartan Poker’s IOPC that will take the virtual felts by storm from January 20. In all, it’s going to be an exhilarating month for online poker!

Adding to the excitement is the brand-new MPL Poker Showdown – a ₹15 Lakhs guaranteed event with 30 celebrities going head-to-head for five rounds of poker starting today at 8 PM. A sixth-round open to MPL Poker will also take place. Don`t forget to tune in to watch the live-streamed action on FilterCopy (YouTube) and across our social media channels.

Moving over to the promotional announcements, IndiaPlays has two free-buy tournaments scheduled this month. For a minimum deposit of ₹500 using the deposit code DEP50K, players can win tickets to both the ₹50K GTD Free-buy tournaments scheduled on January 15 and 29.

In other news, Abhinav Iyer was named the 2021 GPI India Player of the Year for a second consecutive time. Ali Imsirovic won the overall 2021 POY title, while Nadya Magnus (female POY) and David Mzareulov (first-ever Mid-Stakes GPI POY) won the other POY titles.

After a year that saw the online gaming industry rejoicing and then despairing over the slew of online gaming bans, comes more disturbing news from Tamil Nadu. CM MK Stalin on January 7 said that the government would be altogether banning online gaming in the state soon.

In one of the first major collaborations of the year, well-known poker operator Vikram Kumar joined hands with high stakes cash game player & former Rockets Poker Room (Bengaluru) operator Santosh Suvarna to begin poker operations in the Cadillac Casino at DoubleTree by Hilton, Goa.

The only listed Indian company in the casino business, Delta Corp., is reportedly exploring an IPO to expand its online gaming business. The company posted impressive Q3 results, reporting a robust ₹70 Crores in profits on the back of strong growth in its core casino business.

Industry Veteran Vikram Kumar Joins Cadillac Casino Goa, Plans to Launch Digital Poker Games & Poker School

We are in Week 1 of the New Year, and already a possible third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic is raging across the country! However, all is not gloomy with news of another industry collaboration setting up hopes of a one-of-its-kind poker school!

The long-time poker operator Vikram ‘lungi’ Kumar has partnered with high stakes cash game player and former Rockets Poker Room (Bengaluru) operator Santosh Suvarna to start poker operations in the Cadillac Casino at DoubleTree by Hilton, Goa. Located in Panaji, Cadillac Casino opened its doors in March 2020 and has gaming tables for Andar Bahar, Roulette, and many other casino games.

Vikram Kumar and Santosh Suvarna
Vikram Kumar and Santosh Suvarna

Elaborating on his latest venture, Kumar told PokerGuru, “It’s a pleasure to collaborate with Santosh Suvarna and Cadillac Casino. It’s two old friends coming together, we have been thinking about this for many years, and this was the right time, keeping in mind Cadillacs expansion plan in 2022.”

Kumar, who has been a part of many poker ventures, including PokerGuru Staking, also hinted at plans to start a one-of-a-kind poker school and offer poker at the casino on a digital platform. He said, “I would be starting a poker school. I am in the process of preparing the curriculum and also getting the team together to deliver this. The poker school will be one of a kind and will be functional at the DoubleTree Hilton Cadillac Casino. I will oversee the operations, and we will have poker on a digital platform. The business in Goa is flourishing, and my immediate plan is the expansion of Cadillac Casino and providing better facilities to the poker community.“

On the topic of offering poker in the casino, he said, “Yes, we will be offering live poker at the casino, there will be a space for digital machines, and they will also be training and poker school, which will be live for walk-ins and other non-poker clients. I want to make them learn this beautiful game of poker and highlight the skill sets involved to play it.”

Kumar was earlier overseeing the operations at PokerBaazi LIVE. However, his involvement with a competing live gaming venue is an apparent conflict of interest. Hence, he has parted ways with PokerBaazi, effectively ending a five-year-long collaboration. “It has been more than five years of partnership with PokerBaazi – from being their team pro to their live room partner. Now, we have parted our ways and have all my energies in the new project that I’m getting into,” he added.

Even outside the gaming industry, Kumar has other business interests. He owns a real estate group company and has multiple investments in the hospitality and medical industry.

About Vikram Kumar

Like many, Kumar was introduced to poker through Zynga Poker. He started by playing home games in late 2008 and early 2009. However, it was almost eight years later that he grabbed the spotlight when PokerBaazi signed him on as their Team Pro. Before long, Kumar became one of the most vocal poker players in the circuit. His association with PokerBaazi was further strengthened when he got signed on as a strategic consultant at the PokerBaazi LIVE poker room for the brand`s offline venue in Bengaluru the following year.

In 2019, he collaborated with PokerBaazi for the PokerBaazi LIVE poker room in Goa. Kumar has also been a part of the PokerGuru Staking management (formerly known as AceJack).
