April 15 promises to be a historic day for Indian poker as that’s the day the curtains finally rise on the country’s biggest-ever online poker tournament to-date, the much-awaited EndBoss. Laced with a never-before-seen prize pool guarantee of ₹5 Crores, the ₹11,000 buy-in EndBoss promises a jaw-dropping ₹1 Crore to the winner!

The first of four starting flights starts at 7 PM tomorrow, with similar flights taking place each day between April 15-April 18. Players are allowed to fire multiple bullets in each flight and can even enter multiple flights. Still, only the largest stack for each player will be carried forward to Day 2. All the survivors from the starting flights will converge to play down to a winner on Sunday, April 19, from 6 PM onwards.

While a tournament of such massive proportions is bound to pull in the numbers, the extension on the countrywide lockdown should further boost turnouts. Heading into what promises to be an exciting next couple of days, we spoke to a few top pros like PokerBaazi Team Pro Abhishek Rathod, PokerBaazi consultant Jasven Saigal and former MoneyMaker champion, Sandeep Singh, for pointers and strategy tips for the EndBoss Let’s find out what they had to say!

The Expected Turnout!

There can be little doubt that the EndBoss is a very ambitious endeavor by PokerBaazi. Putting up a ₹5 Crores in prize pool guarantee and that too at a ₹11,000 entry point essentially requires a massive 5,000 entries (discounting tournament fee) for the site to break-even.

It also means that PokerBaazi would have to improve upon its previous best turnout from the GameChanger 2.0 that, with 4,796 entries in August last year, remains the biggest entry-field recorded on PokerBaazi. It’s worth noting that GameChanger had a ₹5,000 buy-in.

According to former PokerBaazi Team Mentor Jasven Saigal, who is currently an acting consultant for the site, the EndBoss will crush its GTD.

“I think the turnouts for the EndBoss are going to be exceptionally good because of the lockdown as well. Everyone is sitting home and putting in tons of volume online, so it should be good. Guarantees should get crushed, but it is a big one, so let’s hope for the best,” Saigal said.

PokerBaazi Team Pro Abhishek Rathod seemed to share the same opinion. “This is by far the biggest tournament we have seen to date. Considering the amount of money up top, I am fairly certain the guarantees will be crushed.” Rathod added, “The last flight I feel would have the highest number of entries.”

We asked online regular and the March edition MoneyMaker champion Sandeep Singh the same question and he replied, “I am sure guarantee will be crushed over 4 days as we have seen in this lockdown period in each tournament…expecting to cross 5000 entries in 4 days.”

What Should be the Ideal Bankroll Strategy For the EndBoss?

PokerBaazi Team Pro Abhishek Rathod thinks that it makes sense for most players to fire multiple bullets for such a big tournament. “In general, you should stick to your bankroll. But for such a big tournament you can make an exception. If your limit allows you to use 1 entry for this buy-in, then I would go ahead and use 3-4,” he said.

The EndBoss allows players to fire multiple bullets but take only their biggest stack forward to Day 2. So, what should be the stack threshold below which one can consider firing another bullet? “This is going to differ from person to person. Anything above 20 BBs, and I would think twice before entering another flight,” said Rathod.

Jasven Saigal believed that players should take up to three shots in each flight. “Unless you can’t put in that much, then I would probably play the last flights because you will get maximum numbers, and that should be softer as compared to the rest of the flights.”

His cutoff to enter the next flight was anything less than 30 BBs. “I think if you have less than 30 bigs than you should definitely give it a shot because the up top is so much that it’s worth it.”

Sandeep Singh echoed Saigal’s estimation. “I think anything below 30bb should lead to try another bullet. I will re-enter until it is 30 big blinds or more.”

As for bankroll strategy advice, Singh said, “100 buy-ins should be an effective bankroll to enter in this kind of tournament so that you can spend around 10 buy-ins over 4 days. The last two flights will be softer due to several people getting qualified in the first two flights.”

What Should be the Short Stack Strategy For Day 2?

Jasven Saigal was on point in his advice for the short stacks on Day 2. “Short stacks should just stick to push or fold and try to get it in with their best hand. If you have a big stack, then you should try to put as much pressure as possible on the table and collect as many chips as possible, Saigal said.

Team Pro Abhishek Rathod cautioned, “You play this like just any other tournament. Take it step by step, you can’t win a tournament in one hand, you can definitely lose it.”

He underlined that while bankroll management was critical, it was essential to understand that most of the money is up top. “Going deep is good, but winning the tournament is life-changing. So play to win.”

The former MoneyMaker champion Sandeep Singh had a word of advice for all stack sizes, “With a large stack, try to put pressure on medium stacks as their bubble factor is higher in front of short stacks if there are multiple short stacks on the table. For medium stacks, try to steal blind and put pressure by 3-betting light.”

With so much prize money at stake and the play involving long hours, players need to be patient, and Singh summed it all well. “Play each hand to its merit and as it comes.”
