2016 ACOP: David Peters Takes Down High Roller Title; Wenling Gao & Huihan Wu Collect Last Spadies

The 2016 Asia Championship of Poker (ACOP) came to a close on Sunday night with David Peters (cover image) taking down the HKD 250,000 High Roller title, HKD 4,885,200 in prize money and the coveted Spadie for his first place finish.

The series crowned three other champions with China’s Wenling Gao taking down the HKD 11,000 Megastack Championship for HKD 301,201 and fellow countryman Huihan Wu winning the HKD 2,500 Re-buy Championship for HKD 113,362. The final side event i.e. HKD 3,000 NLH was won by Singapore’s Eric Hwee Soh for HKD 72,905.

Held at the PokerStars LIVE Macau poker room, the poker festival drew a series record 4,479 players and awarded more than HK$95 million (~USD $12.3 million) in prize money through its 17-day run. Taiwan`s Jack En-ching Wu was crowned the official 2016 Asia Player of the Year and receieved a one-year sponsorship from PokerStars LIVE Macau for topping the APOY leaderboard!

“It’s a tremendous result! Participation is up nearly 50% from last year so we’re certainly optimistic about the future growth of the ACOP,” said APPT President Mark Blake.

 

HKD 250,000 High Roller – Final Table

After taking over the chip lead on Day 2, David Peters refused to relinquish it until he had the Spadie for the High Roller, collecting the prize of HKD 4,885,200 for his first place finish.

The exultant winner later stated, “I feel amazing. This was a very nice tournament to win and it went very smoothly. Usually it’s a little rougher but things went my way and I felt I played great the whole tournament. I felt like I was in the zone the whole time.”

In all, the event drew 71 entries generating a prize pool of HKD 16,699,200, with the top nine finishers making it in the money!

The final table began with Paul Newey doubling through Yaqi Sun, whose were then crushed by Peters’ . Sun was the first to exit at ninth place for HKD 484,000. Peters went on to eliminate Roman Korenev at seventh and Leo Cheng at fifth place respectively.

Four-handed , Peters had accumulated 13.5 million, while his closest competitor had just 1.5 million in chips. In minutes he disposed off the greatest threat in Artem Metalidi and Daniel Dvoress at fourth and third place respectively.

Heads up Peters faced businessman Paul Newey, who was making his second final table this series, with his earlier one at the Super High Roller. Peters had a 7 to 1 chip advantage and the final match was over in an hour when Peters moved all-in and Newey called.

Peters was already in the dominating position and the board with confirmed his victory. Newey made a second place finish for HKD 3,507,000.

HKD 11,000 Megastack Championship

184 hopefuls signed on for the Megastack Championship creating a prize pool of HKD 1,766,952, which saw the top 21 finishers cash a minimum HKD 17,700. Wenling Gao emerged the ultimate winner taking home HKD 301,201 for her efforts.

HKD 2,500 Re-buy Championship

Huihan Wu defeated a field of 73 runners, plus 57 re-buys to claim the title at the Re-buy Championship for a prize of HKD 113,362. A heads up deal saw Fuk On Wong make HKD 104,700 for his runner-up finish.

Side Event – HKD 3000 NLH

The last NLH event attracted 105 entries creating a prize pool of HKD 274,995. Last man standing was Eric Hwee Soh who took home the winning cash of HKD 72,905.

Jack En-ching Wu Crowned 2016 ‘Asia Player of the Year’

With the series coming to an end, Taiwan’s Jack En-ching Wu has been officially crowned the 2016 Asia Player of the Year. Wu enjoyed a breakout season with 23 final table finishes including six titles that fetched him a record 9,492 points! Wu receives a one-year sponsorship from PokerStars LIVE Macau and also gets his name etched permanently on the prestigious APOY trophy!

That ends this year’s ACOP series, and coming up next is the ACOP Platinum Series 16 that takes place from Jan 6-15, 2017.
