Online poker giant, PokerStars, has announced the schedule for the 2019 World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) which is slated to run from September 5 to 25. Comprising of 73 events, the 2019 WCOOP offers a record $75 Million in prize pool guarantees!

While the 2018 WCOOP was a phenomenal success with the greatest number of titles going to Brazilian players (23 WCOOP titles), followed by the United Kingdom (22 WCOOP titles) and Russia (14 WCOOP titles), there was a noticeable lack of Indian participants at the WCOOP last year as they had been barred from playing on the international client following the launch of PokerStars India in April 2018.

PokerStars’ entry into India’s ring-fenced market has been largely lackluster so far. Despite offering lucrative promotions and hosting several high-value tournaments, the site is still struggling to grab a significant market share in the domestic market even after 16 months of operations. Moreover, a brand that has followed a tournament-centric strategy globally has had to repeatedly reduce the prize pool guarantee of its flagship weekly tournament – Sunday Special – and even then, the event has repetitively failed to meet its guarantee. In fact, PokerStars India had earlier this year run the first-ever India Summer Championship of Online Poker (INSCOOP) – a domestic version of its marquee SCOOP series – from May 13 to 27. The series offered the largest-ever prize pool of₹4.16 Crores for an online series on PokerStars India, but it was not enough to pull in numbers. PokerStars India eventually had to increase the number of starting flights to its star attraction ₹1 Crore GTD Main Event – The Mammoth, in order to avoid a massive overlay.

The WCOOP is one of the biggest (if not THE BIGGEST) online poker tournament series today and is often considered the virtual counterpart of the World Series of Poker (WSOP). This year around, the series will once again offer players a chance to compete against the best in the business across the globe, however, the Indian poker community will miss out on this golden opportunity as the series will only be available on the international client and not on PokerStars India.

There has been no news of PokerStars coming out with an India-facing WCOOP so far and following the humdrum reaction that PokerStars India has received since its inception, along with the insipid performance of the INSCOOP, the possibility of an INWCOOP (or something similar) taking place anytime soon, seems bleak.

Besides its uninspiring performance in India, PokerStars has also had a rough time on the international spectrum. For the first time in three years, the online gaming conglomerate fell short of generating $200 Million in poker revenue as the total revenue from poker operations reported this quarter amounted to $191.5 million. PokerStars also witnessed a third consecutive quarter of year-over-year decline with the site’s revenue dropping by 12%.

2019 WCOOP: September 5-25

As always, this year’s WCOOP will also be littered with a plethora of tournaments, 73 tournaments to be precise, and the series is sure to test the mettle of players from all across the world. Sporting $75 Million in prize pool guarantees, the series, as usual, has three tiers of buy-in for each event – low, medium and high – ensuring that players across different stakes can participate.

Commenting on the upcoming series, PokerStars’ Managing Director & Commercial Officer of Poker, Severin Rasset, stated, “The team at PokerStars has designed the WCOOP that we would like to play and added the biggest guarantee to date. We aim to give all our players a chance to find a tournament for them. That’s why we are offering a large range of formats, buy-ins and plenty of routes to qualify. The 20-day tournament series is going to be huge for everyone and we can’t wait to see the results.”

The series will also play host to Low and High Main Events which will play out on September 22. For a buy-in of $55, the Low Main Event offers a guarantee of $1.25 Million, whereas, for a buy-in of $5,200, the High Main Event boasts of a colossal guarantee of $10 Million.

Following PokerStars partnership with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), the site will be hosting special UFC tournaments on September 15 that have been divided into four categories –

i) $11 buy-in: “bantamweight”

ii) $109 buy-in: “lightweight”

iii) $1,050 buy-in: “middleweight”

iv) $10,300 buy-in: “heavyweight”

In addition to the typical cash prizes, winners of these UFC tournaments will also earn a package to UFC®244 in New York on November 3 that includes hotel and travel expenses.

That’s not all! For players interested in charitable causes, a $55 buy-in event will be hosted on September 8, wherein all the rake collected will go toward the PokerStars’ partner, “Right to Play Charity.”

An additional $50,000 is up for grabs for the top three finishers of each, with $20,000 going to the overall leaderboard winner. There are also trophies up for grabs for each leaderboard winner as well as the overall winner.
