Event #71: SALUTE TO WARRIORS – $500 No-Limit Hold’em is another marquee event at the 50th annual World Series of Poker (WSOP) that was introduced in honor of the members of the United States armed forces, both active duty military and veterans. The first of its kind single re-entry event featured a $500 buy-in, $40 of which will be going to the United Services Organization (USO) and other military-related charities.
Day 1 of the event commenced on July 2 and pulled in 1,723 entries, creating a prize pool of $723,660. 267 entrants survived the day’s onslaught and among them were two Indian challengers – Aditya S and Sachidananda Sivakumar. S bagged the 21st biggest stack of the day with 310,000 chips (62 big blinds), while Sivakumar amassed a below-average stack of 70,000 (14 big blinds).
Dominique Terzian emerged as the overnight chip leader with a stack of 801,000 (approx. 160 big blinds) and will lead the 267 Day 1 survivors to Day 2 that starts at 12 PM (Pacific Time Zone) on July 3.
Day 3 of the tournament will be hosted on July 5, since July 4 is the American Independence Day and players, which also comprise of many active military personnel and veterans, will fittingly get a day off.
With the top 259 places assured a min-cash of $699 (₹48,112), the fight to finish in the money will intensify as the players return for Day 2 later tonight.
Event #71: SALUTE TO WARRIORS – $500 No-Limit Hold’em – Day 1
A total of 1,723 entries were registered for Day 1, out of which only 267 runners progressed to Day 2. Representing Team India in the event was Aditya S. Better known for his forays in the domestic circuit which includes a runner-up finish in the ₹15K NLHE Bounty at the 2016 DPT November edition for ₹2.72 Lakhs, S is yet to open his scorecard at the WSOP. Tournament reports suggest that S had fired an additional bullet before re-entering. The second bullet fared him better as he was able to bag a stack of 62 big blinds by the end of Day 1, amounting to 310,000 in chips. He holds the 21st biggest stack coming into Day 2.
S will be joined on Day 2 by a lesser known Indian player Sachidananda Sivakumar. According to tournament reports, Sivakumar hails from Coimbatore, India and will be coming back with a stack of 14 big blinds (70,000) heading into Day 2.
Ashish Gupta (289,000), Jaswinder Sanghera (167,000), Vinny Pahuja (129,500), Kulwant Singh (83,500), Senthil Vitaranyam (61,000) and Manish Bhargava (54,000), were among the Indian-origin players who made it through to Day 2.
Dominique Terzian (801,000), Garry Stevenssmith (572,000) and Michael Nosek (517,000) rounded out the top three stacks at the end of the day’s play.
