The $1,110 buy-in Mid-States Poker Tour 2022 Ohio State Poker Championship at JACK Casino Cleveland attracted 991 players, collecting $959,770 in the prize pool. After 13 hours of action, Minnesota native John Dennehey outlasted them all to win the title for a career-best $155,933. A heads-up deal saw Dustin Mcelhaney take home a runner-up payout worth $133,058.

John Dennehey has been playing poker recreationally for over 20 years. He is a family man with two kids who turned to tournaments only in the last three years. Before the win, he had $156,230 in lifetime earnings, with his biggest score worth $38,168.

After the win, an exhausted Dennehey said, “I just feel elated right now. I just played my hands.”

He said, sharing advice for others, “My only advice to all players playing these things is to never give up. I was the short stack nearly the whole tournament, but here I am.”

The top 108 places walked past the money line with a min-cash worth $2,016.

Cory Skolnik topped the 619-entry field in the $600 NLHE Monster Stack event at the DeepStack Extravaganza Poker Series at Venetian Las Vegas, banking the lion’s share of the $313,833 prize pool, worth a personal-best $55,442. He defeated Hawaii’s Jesse Rivera (2nd for $34,264) in the heads-up play.

Skolnik hit the jackpot with the win as he had a little over $5,000 in tournament earnings before the victory, according to his Hendon Mob profile.

Some other notables to cross the money line included Dustin Lee (13th for $3,609), Michael Dyer (26th for $2,040), Rex Clinkscales (44th for $1,569), and Chip Jett (54th for $1,412).
