Three significant updates from the domestic and international poker industry are part of our latest feature.

Online poker site PokerHigh plans to host a unique poker tournament on September 15 with entry open exclusively for lawyers, in-house counsel, interns, and law students. Called the ‘Justice Mudgal Championship,’ the single-day event pays tribute to retired judge and the current head of the FIFA Governance and Review Committee, Justice Mukul Mudgal with the proceeds from the game to be donated for charitable causes.

Another upcoming site Pocket52 created quite some noise last week by hosting the longest-running cash table in the country that ran non-stop for 71 hours.

The World Series of Poker (WSOP), meanwhile, has added four more events to the schedule of its upcoming WSOPE stop at King’s Casino in Rozvadov (Oct 13 – Nov 2). The new inclusions are a €250,000 Super High Roller, a $2,500 Short Deck and two 8-game events.

PokerHigh Announces Justice Mudgal Tournament For Lawyers & Law Students

Online poker site PokerHigh has announced a special poker tournament, and no, it is not one a massive guaranteed tournament or even an open event for that matter. The site has come up with the ‘Justice Mudgal Championship,’ an event exclusively for lawyers, law students, in-house counsels, and interns.

The tournament pays obeisance to retired Justice Mukul Mudgal, the former Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and current head of the FIFA Governance and Review Committee. For those who don’t know, Justice Mudgal is the father of well-known poker player Dhaval Mudgal who most famously won the WPT Vietnam Main Event last year.

Justice Mudgal is noted for being a strong supporter for legal and regulated gaming in India, and his namesake tournament will be held on September 15 starting 5 PM. The event has a buy-in of ₹4,000 and a ₹2 Lakhs prize pool guarantee. The winner will get to take home the Justice Mudgal Championship Trophy along with ₹1 Lakh in prize money.

All profits made from the event will be donated to a non-profit English medium school Romil Seva Sanstha.

Talking about the initiative, Sumit Khurana, CEO of PokerHigh, said, “I see this as a great opportunity to engage members of the legal fraternity of India by bringing them all together for a sport which draws multiple parallels from the profession they belong to while playing for a cause. On top of that, it will be really interesting to see them battle it out amongst one another on the poker felt.”

Pocket52 Runs India’s Longest Online Poker Cash Table Session

Bengaluru-based poker startup Pocket52 had splashed onto the scene last December after receiving an undisclosed amount of funding from venture capital firm Speciale Invest. The platform has made the headlines once again for running the most extended continuous online poker cash table session in the country, a marathon run that lasted for 71 hours over three days!

The site had come out with a unique ‘Pot of Gold’ (PoG) promotion, where a bonus amount was added to an additional pot to be awarded to the last active player on the cash game table. The record-breaking session took place on a PoG qualified 5-card PLO ₹25/₹50 table with had a table buy-in ranging from ₹1,500 to ₹6,000.

The action on the table kicked off on September 3 and saw 34 entries joining the action at some point or the other in the first 24 hours adding ₹9,685 in the bonus pot. The next day with 28 more players joining in and ₹17,266 was contributed to the PoG pot. On the final day, 26 entries were logged in adding ₹18,185 to the pot. Effectively, with a total of 88 players joining the action, a bonus reward of ₹45,138 was collected with the proceeds reserved for the last active player on the table.

With every player trying to knock out their opponent to survive till the end, the 71-hour cash game session ran akin to a tournament. In the end, two players, ‘Jungleman’ and ‘cooldude’ finally opted to ‘sit out’ after the last hand and chopped the PoG pot worth ₹22,569 each. This was in concurrence of the PoG rules that state, “If all the players on the table sit-out concurrently at the same time, the pot will be chopped between the eligible players.”

A user playing under the moniker ‘vida’ put in the maximum number of hands, i.e., 2,251 hands in all during this marathon run.

Co-founder & CMO at Pocket52 Debashish Bhattacharya in a statement on the site explained, “The concept of Pot of Gold was made with a vision to give poker players an extra incentive to play their favourite game of skill. PoG’s incredible run is sure to be sure to be remembered for a long time in the annals of Indian online poker history and I also believe it will greatly help the Indian online poker community. Our thanks to all the players who helped us create this extraordinary milestone!”
