Adrian Mateos Wins EPT Prague €10,300 Opener

The 2019 PokerStars European Poker Tour (EPT) Prague got off to a fantastic start with 61 players entering the series-opener €10,300 NL Hold’em 8-Max (Single RE) at the host-venue Casino Atrium Hilton. Spanish poker professional and three-time WSOP bracelet winner Adrian Mateos (cover image), who seems to have made a habit out of shipping tournaments, came out on top once again to win the title and the €177,500 cash prize after defeating Anton Yakuba heads-up.

For Mateos, this victory comes two weeks after his blistering run at the partypoker MILLIONS in the Bahamas, where he won back-to-back titles in the Main Event and the $25K SHR.

This is just the start of what promises to be an action-packed poker festival with a whopping 49 events on the schedule that run down from December 6-17. Some of the marquee events at the stop include The EPT National, €2,200 EPT National High Roller, €50,000 EPT Super High Roller, two €25,000 Single-Day High Rollers, €10,300 EPT High Roller, and of course, the €5,300 EPT Main Event.

Last year in the €10K opener, Turkey’s Akin Tuna had emerged victorious, besting a field of 38 entries to win €125,330.

This year with 61 entries, the event generated a prize pool of €591,700. The lion’s share of that worth €177,500 (~$196,304) went to the Spaniard Adrian Mateos, who added another PokerStars Spade trophy to his collection. This for Mateos was his sixth PokerStars EPT victory to add to an already impressive poker career, boosting his recorded live tournament winnings to an astronomical $19.62 million.

Anton Yakuba, who is primarily an online player, took home €128,400 (~$141,994) for his runner-up finish – his career-best tournament score.

Twenty-seven players returned on Day 2, where Seth Davies, Jimmy Guerrero, Kahle Burns, Michael Soyza, Quan Zhou, and Yuan Li were some of the notables who fell out empty-handed.

By the time the nine-handed final table was formed, Anton Yakuba (910,000) was commanding the chip lead with Bertrand Grospellier (580,000) and Adrian Mateos (340,000) rounding out the top three stacks. Orpen Kisacikoglu (145,000) and Arsenii Karmatckii (100,000) were sporting the shortest two stacks.

Final Table Recap

The money bubble tag fell on Matthias Eibinger, who went out first in ninth place to assure the remaining eight players at worst €23,670.

The two short stacks – Arsenii Karmatckii and Orpen Kisacikoglu were the next two players to fall out in places eighth and seventh, respectively.

Post the dinner break, Tsugunari Toma became the first elimination, after he sent his eight big blind stack across the table to Vladimir Troyanovskiy for a sixth-place finish.

French pro, Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier, was the next one to exit. Grospellier’s were in the race against Derek Ip’s two jacks. The runout gave Ip a full house, eliminating Grospellier.

These four soon became three with the elimination of Vladimir Troyanovskiy. Troyanovskiy was short, and he managed to double up before moving all-in with . Russia`s Anton Yakuba came along for the sweat with and flopped a jack to bust Troyanovskiy in fourth place.

Before long, Derek Ip’s pocket jacks were flipping against Adrian Mateos’s . A queen on the board ended Ip’s dream run in third place.

Mateos began the heads-up play holding a 2:1 chip advantage over Anton Yakuba and rode this advantage all the way to the finish line. On the last hand, Mateos moved all-in with on the runout for two pairs. Yakuba tank called with for just king-high – mouthing “you win” to Mateos.
