Barely a mile southeast from where the 2016 World Series of Poker (WSOP) is playing out, another exciting tournament unfolded at the Aria Resort and Casino, with the 2016 partypoker, WPT500. Concluding on Wednesday, July, 6, the event found a champion in Andreas Olympios (cover image), who overcame an entry-field of 3,956 to win $260,000, the largest live tournament score of his career.

On the final day Olympios began with the second smallest stack and wielded it deftly to reach the top, after defeating Wesley Hickey heads-up, who took home $185,000 for his second place finish. Indian-origin player from California, Sanjay Mayekar made a sixth place finish for $58,000.

Final Table Recap

Hickey had a huge chip lead of 20.925 million, moving into the nine-handed final table and his closest competitor, Jonathan Opas had just half with 10.625 million.

Opas took the first elimination, sending Guy Cicconi to the rails at ninth place for $27,150. A little while later, on the 11th hand of the day, Olympios caught a double-up, facilitating his trek to the top.

Opas went on to eliminate Guy Gorelick at eighth place and Khoan Ho at seventh place respectively. At sixth place, Sanjay Mayekar hit the rails, ousted by Drazin Ilich and it was after this that Olympios began chipping up in earnest.

Finally, Opas hit the rails at fifth place with Olympios’ pocket queens busting his own pocket tens. Olympios then went on to eliminate Robby Seurynck at fourth place.

Five hands into three-handed play, Drazin Ilich busted to Hickey for a career-best score of $135,000, setting up the stage for a heads up match between Hickey and Olympios.

Hickey had 15.95 million up against Olympios’ 43.4 million and ten hands was all it took to crown a winner. On Hand #143, Hickey moved allin on the flop and Olympios made the call.
