Today is a Sunday packed with anticipation and excitement for Indian sports fans more so for poker fanatics. Headlining the list of sporting fixtures on the schedule today is the ICC Cricket World Cup finals that will take place between England and New Zealand. There is also the men`s singles Wimbledon finals coming up later in the day and promises to be a cracker as Djokovic takes on Federer. Amid all this sporting madness, we have two international poker tournaments that have Indian players resuming play on the final table. While the more significant of the two will play out at the Rio All-Suites Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas around midnight tonight with Kunal Punjwani and Kalyan Chakravarthy chasing the elusive gold bracelet, the other takes place closer to home at the Pro Poker Club in Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam.

While we have written a lot about Team India`s performance at the WSOP these last few weeks, a group of PokerGuru Ambassadors has been doing the country proud at the ongoing Asian Poker Tour (APT) Vietnam series. PokerGuru Ambassadors Ashish Munot & Laksh Pal Singh along with Asian circuit regular Sumit Sapra are all part of a small group of Indians present at the series, and all three of them had advanced to Day 3 in the VND 6 Billion GTD Championships Event. The event had logged in a player-field of 192 entries and Day 3 saw 24 among them returning to play down to the final table. Five hours of play later, the eight-handed final table was formed where placed third in chips is none other than our very own Ashish Munot.

The other two Indians – Sumit Sapra and Laksh Pal Singh – hit the rail on Day 3 with Sapra falling out of the money. Singh did better with a 16th place finish worth VND 83,160,000 (~₹2.46 Lakhs) in prize money.

Munot already has a few reasons to celebrate. All eight finalists are assured of winning VND 206,920,000 (~₹6.13 Lakhs), and with that, Munot is already guaranteed to collect his career-best score. He will be entering the final table holding approximately 43 big blinds (1,041,000), making him the third largest stack on the table.

The final table captain and by a wide margin is Filipino pro Joseph Talamayan who eliminated six players on Day 3 to amass a commanding lead. Talamayan has accrued a monster stack of 3,715,000 – approximately 155 big blinds and commands over a third of chips in play.

The final eight resume play today from 1.30 pm (ICT) at the opening blinds of 12,000/24,000. Fans and railbirds can follow the action on the YouTube and Twitch channels of APT.

The entire final table will be live-streamed and you can watch the complete live action here.

VND 6 Billion GTD Championships Event – Day 3 Recap

The event saw six Indians in the battle, but only three of them could advance to Day 3, that began with the opening blinds of 4,000 – 8,000 and a trimmed down field of 24 survivors.

India’s Sumit Sapra had brought an above-average stack of 305,000 (38 big blinds) on Day 3, and almost immediately he started slipping after losing a pot early on to Cao Ngoc Anh. His downward slide continued, and he hit the rail before the money bubble. In a three-way pot after the flop, Lim Chor Heng bet 38,000, Cao Ngoc Anh called, and Sapra moved all-in from the small blind. The big blind mucked his cards, and Heng moved all in for 484,000. Anh tanked, using two time banks before making the call for the showdown.

Sapra had a pair of jacks, Heng a flush draw, and Anh who also paired his jack was ahead with his ace-kicker. Nothing changed on the turn, but the on the river improved Sapra to two-pair, but it also completed Heng’s flush, and just like that, Sapra was eliminated empty-handed.

As luck would have it, it was Heng again who eliminated the other Indian and PokerGuru Ambassador Laksh Pal Singh, in Level 19. The hand began with Heng opening the pot with and Singh three-bet for 100,000 holding . Heng called to see the flop open . Heng had flopped a set and decided to slow play the monster by opting to check. Singh fired a bet of 75,000 trying to extract value with pocket aces, and Heng called. On the turn, Heng fired a bet of 40,000 inducing a shove from Singh. Heng quickly called for the showdown. The on the river wasn’t what Singh was looking for, and he had to leave in 16th place (VND 83,160,000 – ₹2.46 Lakhs).

As for Ashish Munot, who was the other PokerGuru Ambassador in the field, he entered Day 3 with 328,000 (41 big blinds). In Level 19 Munot eliminated Ngo Trung Hieu (17th for VND 83,160,000) in a hand that began with Hieu raising for 30,000 and Munot three-bet to 107,000 from the small blind. Hieu moved all in with and Munot snap-called with . The board ran eliminating Hieu while Munot’s stack crossed the 1 Million-mark. Munot went on to collect another sizeable pot off Tanaka Masatoshi shortly after that.

It was not all smooth sailing for the Chennai-based Indian who got coolered holding pocket sevens by David Erquilaga`s pocket queens in Level 20. Down to 970,000, Munot lost more chips, this time to end-of-day chip leader Talamayan, but ultimately recovered after doubling up through Vamerdino Magsakay with his pocket queens holding up against ace-king. The only Indian still in contention for the title, Munot will be resuming play on the eight-handed final table with a stack of 1,041,000 (43 big blinds).
