With the Main Event title firmly in its grasp, Team India has next set its sights on the second featured event at the 2019 Asian Poker Tour Vietnam – the VND 6 Billion GTD Championships Event!
The second and last starting flight of the Championships Event played out on Thursday amid 82 entries, and 45 among them found a berth for Day 2. This makes for a total field size of 148 (Day 1A – 66, Day 1B – 82) entries in the event so far with late registrations open for the first hour of play today. Coming out on top of the field was seasoned pro Dhaval Mudgal, who, with a stack of 294,200 (245 BBs), assumes the role of the start of Day 2 chip leader among the 81 total qualifiers. The musician turned poker pro has been on a run of a lifetime these last few months and even managed a decent run in the Main Event just a few days ago – finishing 14th for ₹3.38 Lakhs. It is worth pointing out that Mudgal has final tabled an incredible seven major tournaments since his smashing victory in the WPT Vietnam Main Event in September last year. Still, that second title has somehow eluded him. He will be looking to break the title jinx here.
Mudgal is the not the only desi advancing from Day 1B as another four Indians were successful in bagging a stack for Day 2, which combined with the five qualifiers on Day 1A makes for a total tally of 10 Team India challengers entering Day 2. The list of Day 1B survivors features two PokerGuru Ambassadors – Madhav Gupta (115,000 – 96 BBs) and Kartik Ved (57,800 – 48 BBs). After almost a decade playing the game, Gupta finally won his first major tournament title last month when he took down the ₹20K MegaStack title at the WPT India. He looks hungry for another deep run, and his 11th place finish in the Main Event earlier this week should have warmed him up nicely!
Giving them company are Sahil Chuttani (82,700 – 69 BBs), and Sajal Gupta (39,000 – 33 BBs), both having already posted final table finishes in separate side events at the stop.
Along with the five Indian Day 1A qualifiers, there are now 10 Indians who’ll be coming back on Day 2.
