The 2014 Beijing Cup was held at the Star Poker Club from December 17-21 and the ¥ 8,800 buy-in Main Event was won by Yang Zhang (cover image) , who claimed the title and the winner’s purse of ¥623,125 (US$99,700).
Zhang was runner up at the Beijing Millions, held in July this year, which drew 2732 entries and became the biggest poker tournament held outside the United States setting a record for any PokerStars affiliated event.
This year, Dec hosted the inaugural APPT logistically supported Beijing Cup, which featured a ¥8,800 (US $1,500) buy-in freezeout tournament that had three starting flights. A player field of 346 entries created a prize pool of ¥2,768,000 (US$445,000.) Only the top 38 places made the money and 33 of these were Chinese players.
Though local players dominated the numbers, there were several from Hong Kong, Macau and Taipei. A few foreign players were Germany’s Andreas Rauh at 27th, Mongolia’s Tserendorj Batsuren at 19th, Canada’s Fu Li at 12th and Korea’s Joon-han Lee who final tabled at 9th.
The last eight players were all Chinese and in the ensuing heads up play, Yang Zhang defeated Yonggang Wang, who retired for 2nd place with ¥429,000 (US$68,640.)
