American poker stalwart Sam Soverel (cover image) has been on a blistering run at the ongoing 2019 British Poker Open that is taking place at the Aspers Casino in Stratford, London. He missed the title by a whisker in the second tournament of the series, the £10K PLO where he finished runner-up to George Wolff. As it turned out, Soverel who was one of the strongest contenders to win the title in the £10K NLH failed to finish the job once again conceding the title to Paul Newey. The two close misses don’t seem to have pulled Soverel down. Soverel was already leading the BPO leaderboard when he entering the £25K No-Limit Hold ‘em. Coming into the final table as the chip leader the formidable poker pro took down the title, winning £322,000, further consolidating his position on top of the BPO leaderboard!

“People haven’t had big hands against me and I won some important flips. I’d lost some big ones at the end [of other events] but won others to get there, so got really lucky,” Soverel said, post-victory.

While Soverel retains his position on top of the BPO Leaderboard, he now commands a whopping 480 points and is looking down at the next two contenders Sam Greenwood (260 points) and Robert Flink (240 points) from a significant distance.

Talking about his experience so far at the series, Soverel said, “I like pretty much everyone here and they’re fun to play with. It’s a lot of really tough competition, a bit tougher than I had hoped for, but it’s fun to play with really good players – you learn a lot.”

Soverel also noted that tournament standards were on the rise, “I think the tournament players of today are significantly better than they were. When I started playing, cash game players looked down on tournament players but I think right now tournament players are really studied and really good, probably because there’s so much money in it.”

A total of 28 entrants saw the prize pool swell to £700,000 and Soverel was the top earner among the four players who could guarantee themselves a cash.

When the final five bagged up at the end of Day 1, Soverel held a commanding 1,005,000 stack, far ahead of the next big stacks Ali Imsirovic (780,000) and Rainer Kempe (765,000).
