The Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) Venetian Main Event made a rerun this week featuring an increased $1,600 entry buy-in and a correspondingly amped-up $2 Million prize pool guarantee. The Chip Leader Coaching founder Chance Kornuth (cover image) defeated Peter Braglia heads-up to win his first MSPT Main Event title, scoring an excellent $412,086 payday.

Chance Kornuth needs no introduction. He is a well-known professional poker player from Colorado and a renowned poker coach with two WSOP gold bracelets to his name. His best-recorded live score is a third-place finish in the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) Bahamas at the beginning of 2015 for $641,140. According to his Hendon Mob profile, Kornuth boasts $7.64 Million in live tournament cashes and was widely talked about for being a part of Phil Galfond`s heads-up challenge. He conceded the challenge earlier in the year.

In the post-match interview, Kornuth said that he had forgotten about the MSPT Venetian Main Event but his friend, who wanted to stay at his place for the event, reminded him about it. When asked about his current plans, Kornuth said that he is busy working on his poker coaching business, Chip Leader Coaching, and is busy raising a kid.

Kornuth became a father in December last year and is currently focusing on his parenting life. He said, “I’ve been focusing on dad life,” and added, “I couldn’t be happier.”

The Main Event registered 2,011 entries (Day 1A – 314, Day 1B – 665, and Day 1C – 1,032) over three starting flights to collect a guarantee-smashing $2,865,675 (over 40% more than the advertised guarantee). Day 2 began with 309 survivors, and only 207 places were to get paid, with a min-cash worth $3,725.

The notable Day 2 ITM finishers included Scott Davies, Joseph Cheong, Ryan Laplante, Jeremy Koehler, Ralph Perry, Jesse Sylvia, and Anthony Zinno.

Day 2 played down to 15 players, and Anthony Potis (16th for $26,651), Dominick Sannino (17th for $26,651), and Tony Tran (18th for $26,651) were the last few to hit the rail.

It took three levels of play on Day 3 to form the nine-handed final table. Chance Kornuth (21,000,000) did most of the work, eliminating four of the six returning players to work up a commanding chip lead entering the final table.
