Chino Rheem Wins the 2013 World Poker Tour Championship

The 2013 World Poker Tour Season 11 concluded last Saturday, with $25,000 WPT World Championship event at Bellagio, Las Vegas. The event drew a total of 146 entries, crowning David ‘Chino’ Rheem (cover image) as the Champion who defeated Erick Lindgren in the heads-up play. With this victory Rheem is now a two- time WPT champion (His first victory came at the Five Diamond World Poker Classic in Season VII) making his way to reach the 25th rank on the overall POY leaderboard. Apart from the prestigious title he took home $1,150,297 as prize money.

The final table of the main event saw six players qualifying as the final six to battle it out for the championship. It was a tough final table that featured the likes of Matt Hyman, Brandon Steven, David Peters and 2012 WPT Montreal champ Jonathan Roy.

Rheem entered the final table with a substantial chip lead over his opponents. Next in chip counts was Erick who was making a comeback after a difficult 2012.

The first one to leave the final table was David Peters. The hand began with Roy raising to 80,000 under the gun. Peters re-raised to 165,000 from middle position and Roy called. The flop was dealt and Roy checked. Peters bet 140,000 and Roy moved all in. Peters made the all-in call with but Roy held the lead with . The turn and river could not save Peters and he was eliminated in sixth place, for $173,993.

There was a long pause before the next elimination. Steven was the shortest stack at the table and in an effort to push his way back into the game he went all in pre-flop from the button holding . Roy held and called from under the gun. No luck on the board eliminated Steven in the fifth place for $223,203.

Roy continued his hot streak and eliminated Matt Hyman a few hands later. Hyman raised under the gun preflop to 175,000, Rheem three-bet to 450,000 from the button and Roy four-bet to 1,025,000. Hyman holding moved all-in, Rheem folded and Roy called with . The board was dealt and once again Roy won the pot with Hymen finishing in the fourth place taking home $289,988.

Roy managed to build up a big stack nearly even with the chip leader Rheem, but the in the three handed play lost twice to the Lindgren and his run quickly ended when he lost a massive pot to Rheem. In the hand Rheem raised to 250,000 on the button and Roy re-raised to 670,000 from the small blind. Afetr Rheem called the flop opened . After a few rounds of betting the turn brought and the river delivered .Roy’s set of eights fell short on the river while Rheem completed his flush holding . Roy was eliminated in the third place for $421,800 and lost the title of Season XI WPT POY to Matt Salsberg.

The final match was now set as the heads-up action was about to begin between Rheem and Lindgren. Rheem had more than 3-to-1 chip advantage over Lindgren. On the final hand of the tournament Rheem moved all in and Lindgren called. Rheem held and Lindgren tabled . The board was dealt and just like that Rheem won the championship with a king high. Lindgren took home the runner-up prize worth $650,275.
