In a move to promote Goa as a more attractive tourist destination, the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) has come up with a number of new projects recently. The latest announcement indicates that the corporation has roped in Mumbai-based Pawan Hans Helicopters to start chopper rides in the state, a move that might come as a shot in the arm for the region’s casino-hunters.

The high-powered Committee for Tourism Infrastructure Projects in Goa has already cleared the venture and we may soon have helicopters ferrying gamblers and tourists from the Goan mainland to offshore casinos equipped with helipads. The service is likely to not only attract the high-end casino visitors but is also expected to be popular among the estimated 40,000 foreigners who visit Goa round the year.A large chunk of these tourists visit the booming casino industry, which is made up of four operational offshore casinos and nearly a dozen onshore casino operations.

On the occasion of pre-launch familiarization flight, Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar said that he hopes that this move will bolster the image of the tourism industry and bring in the much-required world-class touch to the sector.

The central government-owned helicopter service company – Pawan Hans Chairman and Managing Director B P Sharma mentioned that a security protocol was evolved with the Goa Police to ensure strict safety and security of tourists and the choppers.

“Presently we are only doing sight-seeing from the top. Later, we will be doing inter-city connectivity from Panaji to Old Goa (a popular heritage church complex). Old Goa to airport. Airport to Panaji and then also to connect some of the hotels and casinos that have the facility of helipads,” Sharma said.

Sharma was happy to commence operations in the third state where “we have come only for tourism purposes,” he said adding that the commercial launch of the helicopter aerial joy rides over Goa’s tourism hotspots like beaches, backwaters and heritage sites would begin on January 31.

“Goans and tourists will enjoy it very much. It will be a landmark in Goa Tourism. To start with, we are putting two helicopters with six-passenger capacity each and we hope that the business will grow here and if the demand grows we will add more,” added Sharma.
