No movie to date has beaten the cult-classic “Rounders” in its popularity with poker players. There were talks of a sequel, which never materialized. And then, last year, another poker-themed movie “Runner Runner” hit the theatres, but was unable to impress the box office. Reports are now in of a new movie “Cold Deck” being made with a poker background. The Canadian film is said to be a crime thriller and stars Paul Sorvino, Robert Knepper and Stéfano Gallo.
Zack Bernbaum, who earlier directed “And Now a Word From Our Sponsor” is at the helm of the movie and the screenplay is by Jason Lapeyre, Stéfano Gallo and Slater Jewell-Kempker.
The trailer of Cold Deck shows Robert Knepper sporting a blunderbuss axe, which is a cross between a short bore gun and an axe.
“Stuck in a dead-end job that can barely pay for his mother’s medical care, Bobby Locke’s (Gallo) only escape is poker. His skills at the table are put to the test regularly at ‘Scruples’, a club run by an enigmatic father-figure affectionately known as ‘Chips’ (Sorvino). Fed up with his lot in life, Bobby decides to seize the opportunity that arises when he is invited to a secret high-roller game, and along with his friend Ben, plots to rob these wealthy businessmen. Unfortunately, the game is presided by Turk, who viciously sets out to get revenge. Now Bobby is caught up in a new kind of game, one that could threaten his very survival.”
The synopsis of the movie sounds all too familiar, only with poker as the setting. However, the final outcome will depend on the director’s handling of the film and for poker lovers, on how much authenticity of the game has been retained.
