The PokerStars Live team which handles all live events and tournaments for the online gaming giant has a new Executive Tournament Director. Moving out of his current role as the WPT Live Events Specialistof WPT-Asian Pacific region Danny McDonagh (cover image), is joining the PokerStars Live team.

For those unaware, McDonagh was an integral part of PokerStars when he joined in 2007 as Asian Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) Tournament Director and became Director of Live Operations, President of the APPT and Commissioner of the Australia New Zealand Poker Tour (ANZPT), all in a span of nine years.

Then McDonagh took an abrupt break where he went “missing” when he spent time with his mother in Australia, was teaching English in Cambodia for three months and travelled a lot including a two-month trip to Las Vegas where he was introduced to the WPT role and started up early 2017. McDonagh was also the lead in-charge and the Tournament Director at the inaugural WPT India.

Now, McDonagh’s entry is being seen as a move by PokerStars to add a fresh breath of energy and action in PokerStars Live. Known for his effervescent and charismatic persona, McDonagh’s first official appearance in this new position will be at the European Poker Tour (EPT) at Barcelona in August 2018 followed by the EPT Prague at the year-end, followed by the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure.

For me I foresee and exciting future for the EPT. An EPT to be an event all players will aspire to attend with a wide variance of buy-ins. New formats are already being trialled with the BB ante and Shot Clock in Monaco and there is the push from the top for the Live Events team to introduce new innovative events“, said McDonagh in an interview on the PokerStars blog.

Starting out as a team member and later Tournament Director of Crown Melbourne poker room in 1997, the veteran is going with all guns loaded to apply his prior experience in the Asia Pacific region and concentrate on the flagship events of PokerStars Live.

Apart from the routine supervision of tournament rules, regulations, review of schedules and structures, he intends to focus on flagship events with a clear priority being the players. He wants to come across as an approachable person who can be easily reached.

I will also be a point of reference for our players to have a voice about our events, in person at events or connecting to me via social media.” McDonagh has already started reviewing the poker offerings of PokerStars Live and is part of the PokerStars Live team to bring in innovations and new, exciting changes”, he added.
