Celebrations just escalated for the New Year with two of our young Indian players, both final tabling the last and the largest ever Sunday Million of this year!
The PokerStars December Festival featured special Sunday Million had the highest ever $5 Million guaranteed pay out and Abhishek ‘alwaysdegen’ Kumar made 7th place for $96,014.70, with Young Gun Aditya ‘donkab0mber’ Sushant (cover image) making 9th place for $52,754.64.
Sushant now holds the distinction of being the only Indian player to final table the Sunday Million twice.
Several other Indian players participated in the humongous event, which had 31,439 entries and Aditya ‘Intervention’ Agarwal was another who made a deep run finishing 388 in the massive crowd.
With Armaan ‘armaan007’ Kochhar’s 4th place finish for $70,816 last week on Dec 21 at the Sunday Million, India now has back-to-back finishes at this hugely coveted weekly PokerStars tournament.
Norway’s ‘TrondheimAAA’ took the title and a mouth-watering $489,130.83 as the winner’s share, after a six-way deal.
This Sunday Million had a prize pool of $6,287,800 and within five hours of play, the 31,439 entries were whittled down to 5,220 players. It took another seven hours for just 2 tables to remain with 18 players.
At this point, Sushant had the chip lead.
Sushant played a highly impressive game, one that saw him stage a herculean comeback after dropping to less than 5 big blinds during the middle stages of the tournament. It was a truly miraculous hand, where he won a huge pot of over 50 million to take the chip lead with two tables remaining. This happened when Sushant had pocket jacks and his opponent held pocket queens. The flop began the suspense by delivering a queen. As Sushant waited with bated breath, an unbelievable turn and an amazing river, both, gave forth jacks and Sushant saved his tournament life and took a commanding lead.
It was a great day for India, with a first of two Indians at the final table and the dream run went on until, Abhishek unexpectedly became the cause of Sushant’s ouster.
Abhishek opened with a double raise to 3.4 million. Sushant three-bet to 15.3 million and Abhishek shoved. Sushant had and finally called for his last 350,944 chips. Abhishek had , when the flop released an ace and the turn and river held no further succor for Sushant, who was out at 9th.
Just a little later, Abhishek’s came up against Zarmil’s . While the flop and turn favored Abhishek, the river disappointed with an and Abhishek was out at 7th place.
We spoke to Abhishek on his deep run in the Sunday Million and he said, “I had never made it to the final table of an event of this scale, so in the beginning I was a little nervous partly because of my short stack but after a few orbits I got comfortable and started playing my game. I am a little disappointed that I didn’t win it, but I am really happy with my performance.”
The remaining six players made a deal, with an extra $50,000 for the winner, guaranteeing them all a purse far larger than the usual Sunday Million top prize. Kumar missed this deal by just a whisker.
In the heads up play, ‘straßenjupp’ had and ‘TrondheimAAA’ held . The board ran out and ‘TrondheimAAA’ walked away with the top prize and the bragging rights of winning the year`s largest Sunday Million.
