The five-day long 2019 Deltin Poker Tournament (DPT) February edition has finally come to a close with the culmination of the ₹35K Main Event which declared a winner in Ankit Kapoor (cover image). Kapoor has been on a final tabling streak since last November when he reached the final table of two 2018 WPT India events. He got straight down to business here with a final table finish in the opening event at the series where he eventually placed 3rd for ₹2.90 Lakhs and he did two places better tonight.

In the pre-heads-up interview Kapoor had said that since his stellar run in the opening event his chances have mathematically been getting better. And ultimately his words came true as he easily bested Mayank Jaggi in the final showdown and claimed a career-best score of ₹22.50 Lakhs.

The ₹35K Main Event, which is the centrepiece of this popular series, began on February 8 and was hosted across three starting flights which registered 286 entries (91 from Day 1A, 114 from Day 1B and 81 from Day 1C). By the end of Day 2, the nine-handed final table had been formed and leading the charge was Kapoor who did not relinquish his lead till the very end.

After masterminding the eliminations of Ankur Sehgal, Arun Karthik and Rachit Prakash, Kapoor had amassed a massive chip lead over heads-up opponent Mayank Jaggi. Even as Jaggi fought hard to remain in contention, it did not take long for the event to wrap up and Kapoor, deservingly, took down his first-ever live tournament title.

Commenting on his victory, Kapoor stated, “It feels great. I couldn’t get over the line in the earlier tournament [15k Deep Dive], but I managed to do it this time, so it feels good. Mayank [Jaggi] played really well. He was a tough opponent and he almost caught me bluffing a few times. I’ll definitely be at all future DPT events, but I’ll try my hand at other Asian tournaments as well.”

The series, which had kicked off on February 7, witnessed some mind-boggling action and nail-biting finishes. The series-opener ₹15K Deep Dive NLH was won by 2018 WSOP Tag Team bracelet winner Nikita Luther for ₹6.80 Lakhs, while Abhishek Goindi donned the crown of this edition’s Adda52 ₹65K High Roller champion and bagged ₹14.50 Lakhs in prize money. The last event on the schedule was the fast-paced ₹15K NLH Bounty which was taken down by online pro Sajjan Barnwal who increased his bankroll by ₹2.30 Lakhs.

The board revealed and Karthik hit a pair of jacks on the turn, but it was still no match for Kapoor’s stronger pocket queens, eliminating the former in fourth place.

The flop fell and Prakash was in the lead with a bottom pair of sevens that made him a 56% favorite to win the pot. Prakash checked and Kapoor led out for 200,000. The turn and river completed the board and Kapoor picked up a jack-high straight to eliminate Prakash in third place.

The heads-up play between Ankit Kapoor (5.7 Million) and Mayank Jaggi (2.7 Million) began with the former taking a commanding lead. Jaggi tried hard to catch up but in the end the chip gap was too vast for Jaggi to overcome.
