While these are Sharma’s top finishes in live Asian settings, Sharma is best known for his scintillating World Series of Poker outing in 2018. After winning a free trip to Vegas via an online poker room, Sharma opened his scorecard at the mega series with three deep runs. He was one of only two Indians who cracked the top 100 in the 2018 WSOP Main Event, finishing 34th for $230,475 (~1.57 Crores).

With that finish, Sharma became an overnight sensation and was one of the most-talked-about players in the country, being the first Indian to finish in the top 50 in the WSOP Main Event!

Proving his WSOP success was no fluke, Sharma, who has been mentored by Danish Shaikh, returned to make a splash in the domestic live scene. He finished runner-up in the DPT Colossus Super High Roller Series 50K Warm Up in May 2019. In January 2020, Sharma again came close to a title victory in the BPT 35K Main Event, taking home the runner-up prize money of 27.29 Lakhs.

Nishant Sharma’s Poker Journey: For the Thrill & Skill of the Game

Sharma’s poker journey, in some ways, has been a road oft-traveled, but in others reflects his deep dedication to the game. A B.Com graduate with a postgraduate Event Management diploma, Sharma first learned about poker in college and started by playing on Zynga Poker.

He admits he first enjoyed the game’s thrill, and “Later on, the flexibility it gives to the professional poker player is unreal.”

He confesses that money played a significant role in his decision to go professional but emphasizes that he was also hooked on the flexibility poker offers.

Talking about how his family was initially opposed to him being a poker player, Sharma said, “Initially, they were very skeptical about it, but they were very supportive and gave me a chance to prove that it’s not gambling but a skill game.”

Sharma has an accomplished online poker record, with tracked online winnings to the tune of 3.51 Crores and 1.35 Crores in online profits.

Lauding the domestic poker operators, Sharma added, “They all are doing an excellent job from their promotions to understanding taxation, which is very important for the players as well.”
