The heads-up challenge between Landon Tice and Bill Perkins has been progressing rather swiftly. The duo has already completed 2,407 hands of their 20,000-hands challenge through six sessions, and the match has been very swingy. Lice had worked up a decent lead by session #5, but Perkins booked a thrifty $67,699 profit in the last session. Even though Tice is still in front, Perkins is trailing for just $16,003, way above par on his 9 BBs/100 hand handicap.

Speaking of heads-up challenges, NLHE heads-up specialist and ‘motor mouth’ Doug Polk landed himself in the spotlight again. This time the three-time WSOP bracelet winner took offense against a CNN article headline that referred to Maria Konnikova as a ‘top poker player.’ His Twitter rant was viewed as sexist by many, and several poker pros, including Jamie Staples and Liv Boeree came to Konnikova’s defense.

We wrap up this ‘Gossip Column’ edition with a TMZ-style report on Hollywood star Ben Affleck’s spotting at the Wynn Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. The actor, who was banned from Hard Rock Casino in 2014, was seen at the high stakes gaming tables at 3 AM on Wednesday, possibly playing blackjack.

Bill Perkins Lands a Big Win on Day 6 of Heads-up Challenge; Landon Tice Holds $16K Overall Lead

The sixth session of the Landon Tice and Bill Perkins heads-up challenge played out on June 12, and it proved to be a winning session for the hedge fund manager-cum-poker enthusiast. Perkins closed the gap further by posting a $67,699 winning session that now leaves him trailing by only $16,003 after 2,407 hands of the 20,000-hand challenge.

The duo has been playing at stakes of $200/$400 No-Limit Hold’em on Americas Cardroom, with Perkins enjoying a lucrative handicap. Tice is offering the entrepreneur a 9 BBs/100 hands handicap, effectively a $720,000 head start, so he has quite some ground to make up before turning a profit.

Tice is going to be in trouble if the current trend keeps up for long. Although they’ve only finished about 12% of the challenge, and the young poker pro is leading, he’ll need to pick up the pace quickly. Perkins negotiated some favorable terms before the start of the match. For Tice to actually win the competition, he must beat Perkins by at least $720,000.01, and he still has over $700,000 to win. At present, Tice is winning just 1.66 big blinds per 100 hands, far off the pace he needs to keep if he has to come out on top.

Day 6 Recap

Day 6 was a short 90-minute affair, and Perkins was the first to take a big hit. However, he bounced back quickly by taking down a $92K pot. After 362 hands of the day’s play got over, Tice’s overall lead had been slashed to less than half a buy-in as Perkins booked a profit of $67,699.

Watch the Day 6 action below.

Day 7 will take place on June 15.

Doug Polk Accused of Making Sexist Comments Targeting Maria Konnikova

Retired poker pro Doug Polk tends to put his foot in his mouth, and he got caught doing that once again. Polk recently targeted Maria Konnikova indirectly after taking offense to a CNN article that described Konnikova as a top poker player.

CNN recently came out with an article that focused on navigating risks in the pandemic and used the phrase – ‘top poker player tells all’ – in the title, and the player in question just happened to be Konnikova.

Irked with CNN calling Konnikova, who has a little over $300,000 in live poker earnings, a ‘top poker player,’ Polk took to Twitter to indirectly mock the Russian-American writer.

Polk has over $9.40 Million in career prize money and three WSOP bracelets. He made it abundantly clear that he was not pleased with CNN labeling Konnikova as a ‘top poker player’ as her achievements did not justify the tag.

Poker pro Liv Boeree jumped in to defend Konnikova by stating she would have had no choice in deciding what headline CNN used in the article. Boeree reminded Polk that editors like using clickbait to get the attention of their readers.

Konnikova responded to Polk’s rant and agreed with Boeree that she was unaware that CNN would refer to her as a ‘top player’ in the article headline.

However, Doug Polk acknowledged that he wasn’t targeting Maria Konnikova but CNN over using the phrase “top poker player.”

Liv Boeree wasn’t the only one to come to Konnikova’s defense.

But the loudest voice among the defenders belonged to partypoker online pro Jaime Staples who accused Polk’s statements as being sexist. Staples said that Polk had to jump in and stir things up when he found a female poker player getting attention. He claimed Polk reacted to the headline only because the top poker player they were referring to was a woman.

Polk defended himself and said he wasn’t sexist and that gender should not be used to determine the accomplishments of a poker player.

The title of the CNN article has since been edited. The ‘top poker player’ has been replaced with ‘poker expert.’

Hollywood A-lister Ben Affleck Spotted at Las Vegas’s Wynn High Stakes Tables at 3 AM

Hollywood celebrity Ben Affleck‘s love for gambling is well-known. On Wednesday morning (June 9), the ‘Gone Girl’ star was seen at Las Vegas’s Wynn Resort and Casino’s high stakes tables at around 3 AM.

The 48-year-old was seen at a gaming table, possibly playing blackjack, along with a brunette dealer. He was wearing a black T-shirt and baseball cap. His fashionable sunglasses were partially hidden in his shirt. Wynn staff were nearby to ensure fans kept their distance.

He did not let the fact that he was banned from another Vegas casino seven years ago for card counting stop him from playing at the tables at a local gaming property. The incident in question happened in 2014. Affleck was banned from the Hard Rock Casino.

He had revealed in an interview, “I took some time to learn the game and became a decent blackjack player. And once I became decent, the casinos asked me not to play blackjack. I mean, the fact that being good at the game is against the rules at the casinos should tell you something about casinos.”

In 2014, the staff at the Hard Rock said enough is enough and reportedly banned Affleck from blackjack for life because of alleged card counting. Affleck was also a key figure in Molly’s Game scandal — underground high-stakes poker games initially run at the Viper Room in West Hollywood. The incident reportedly inspired the 2018 movie “Molly’s Game.”

Affleck was trained in poker by the likes of Annie Duke and Amir Vahedi. In 2019, Affleck was spotted playing poker at the Commerce Casino cardroom in Los Angeles. That night, Affleck nearly fell out of his chair during the game. He reportedly had a sobriety lapse around that time.

The two-time Academy Award winner was seen bonding with Guadalupe Rodriguez, pop star Jennifer Lopez‘s mother, over their shared love of gambling at the slot machines.

Affleck is currently directing an undisclosed project in Sin City as JLo’s mom was also seen on the set.
