Three-time WSOP bracelet winner Phil Galfond‘s ‘Heads-Up’ challenge is bulldozing ahead and has already found its latest challenger in two-time bracelet winner Chance Kornuth.

In case you’re a little out of the loop regarding this story, let us give you a quick recap. In late November, the Run It Once (RIO) founder had thrown open a high-stakes heads-up challenge to the poker community. Entrepreneur Bill Perkins was the first to accept the challenge. He was followed by high-stakes PLO regular Fernando ‘JNandez87’ Habegger and online phenom ‘VeniVidi1993’. Dan ‘Jungleman’ Cates also joined the list of challengers in mid-December.

However, the challenge then hit a slight road bump when Habegger backed out, claiming that he won’t be able to give enough time to the preparation required for the challenge to maximize the EV of his backers. While this move was heavily criticized by the poker Twitterati, Galfond, nevertheless, found a new challenger in poker player, self-published author and Harvard University lecturer, Brandon Adams.

So, now that you’re all caught up let’s get to the latest development in the challenge.

Clash of the Poker Coaches: Chance Kornuth is the Latest Player to Accept Phil Galfond’s HU Challenge

On December 29, Galfond tweeted that a fellow poker coach and equally accomplished PLO player Kornuth had agreed to take up his open challenge.

According to the challenge, Kornuth must play 50,000 hands (in profit) in the heads-up format against Galfond. The game will be played at RIO Poker. The match between Galfond and Kornuth will be conducted at €100 / €200 limits. If Chance wins, then Phil will pay him €1,000,000. Otherwise, Galfond will receive €250 000.

Aside from the real money €100/€200 Pot Limit Omaha stakes, Galfond and Kornuth have agreed in principle to a 4:1 side bet in which Galfond will risk €1,000,000 to Kornuth’s €250,000.

Just like most of Galfond’s challengers, Kornuth is another top name with an enviable poker resume. Besides being a two-time WSOP bracelet winner, Kornuth is also ranked second in Colorado’s All-Time Money List. With nearly $7.5 Million in live tournaments earnings, Kornuth has earned a reputation of being a well-renowned instructor at Chip Leader Coaching.

In fact, Kornuth’s cheeky response to Galfond’s tweet shows that unlike Habegger, Kornuth is more than ready to take on his rival poker coach.

The announcement received a lot of positive reaction on Twitter.

All of Galfond’s matches will be available on Twitch, and the dates for each match-up are expected to be announced soon.
