The Galfond Challenge fired up after a long 18-month hibernation on Thursday, with three-time WSOP bracelet winner Phil Galfond taking on his fifth challenger Dan “Jungleman” Cates.

The first session saw the unbeaten Run It Once Poker founder, Phil Galfond, locking in a $1,000 win (essentially $10,000) on WSOP.com after a four-hour-long PLO session against the two-time WSOP Poker Players Championship winner Cates.

As per the arrangement, the duo was to play two tables of $100/$200 PLO but were restricted to playing $10/$20 due to deposit issues on the site. They figured out a workaround to the problem and are technically still playing high stakes. The only adjustment is the losing player after 7,500 hands will owe the winner ten times their losses.

After the first session, Galfond tweeted:

Even after losing the session, Cates humorously tweeted:

Galfond Challenge – A Brief History

Phil Galfond has been on an unbeaten streak in the Galfond Challenge, having won all four of his past challenges.

His first heads-up challenge was against the online beast ‘VeniVedi1993’. The three-month battle was undoubtedly the most brutal for Galfond, who got off to a terrible start but managed an incredible comeback to come out €1,472.08 ahead of his opponent after the required 25,000 hands were dealt, winning the €100,000 side bet.

Galfond’s next challenger was Ioannis’ ActionFreak’ Kontonatsios. Here too, Galfond was trailing from the start but made a turnout and ended up ahead for €114,803. Over and above these winnings, Galfond pocketed an additional €150,000 from the even-money side bet.

The third challenge was a battle of the poker coaches, as Galfond squared off against Chance Kornuth. Kornuth conceded the match on January 24 after 25,000 hands.

Keeping his winning streak intact, Galfond has won two mini-challenges against ‘AmSoGood’ and Dan ‘Jungleman’ Cates.

Galfond also started a challenge against Bill Perkins, but that has yet to go past a couple of sessions.

The fourth Galfond Challenge was to be played live at the Resorts World Casino against Brandon Adams. But Adams had called it quits, with Galfond ahead for $270K, and he cashed another $100K in side bets.
