Valentine’s Day had quite the surprise in store for poker lovers as 15-time WSOP bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth agreed to the HU Challenge against Daniel Negreanu!

The GGPoker Ambassador is fresh from losing a 25,000-hand heads-up challenge against long-time rival Doug Polk where he had to pay $1.2 Million to the latter. While it was always going to be a tough HU Challenge for Negreanu, but he still managed to pull off some surprising heads-up skills against arguably the best heads-up player ever. He was more competitive than many expected.

Negreanu’s friend-turned-foe, Hellmuth, however, wasn’t impressed with his performance and on an interview on the new PokerGo show, ‘No Gamble No Future,’ he criticized the strategy implemented by Negreanu’s coaches. After hearing the critical comments, Negreanu offered up a challenge to the Poker Brat.

Hellmuth has finally responded to the challenge, agreeing to play Negreanu on the PokerGo app.

Hellmuth made it a point to mention all the poker pros he has played over the past few months, effectively proving that while Negreanu was at loggerheads with Polk, Hellmuth wasn’t exactly sitting idle either. Hellmuth played Remko Rinkema and Antonio Esfandiari and is scheduled to play Tom Dwan and Phil Ivey, however, those matches are yet to take places due to COVID-19 induced travel restrictions.

Negreanu was ready with a retort saying that he would play all of them once he is through playing Hellmuth.

Hellmuth also went on to say that his match-up with Negreanu was going to be an epic one.

As expected, poker twitterati went overboard with excitement as the prospect of a Hellmuth v. Negreanu HU Challenge!

Who’s the Favourite to Win?

Even before Hellmuth accepted Negreanu’s challenge the poker community was already abuzz with possible bets. While most believed Negreanu to be a strong favourite, BetOnline.ag had Hellmuth opening as the -150 favorite and Negreanu the +150 underdog.

Polk, who had previously complimented Negreanu’s play considering he doesn’t have extensive heads-up experience, responded to BetOnline.ag’s tweet by wanting to place all his money on his former opponent.

When a Twitter user asked Polk whether Negreanu was “going to totally destroy Phil having had the sessions with you”. Polk replied with a simple “Yes”.

While details of the HU Challenge are yet to be discussed by the two poker greats, the fact that this match-up is finally on the cards is a major update in itself!
