On January 23, the Global Poker Index (GPI) and The Hendon Mob (THM) announced the categories for the fourth annual Global Poker Awards, which are to take place on March 3 (Friday) at the PokerGO Studio inside the ARIA Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

GPI tweeted the announcement.

The 2022 Global Poker Awards will present 29 GPI trophies, recognizing the finest poker achievements of the year. The ceremony will be streamed exclusively on PokerGO starting at 5:30 PM (PT) / 8:30 PM (ET).

Of the 29 categories, three trophies have been locked. Stephen Song is assured of winning two of them in the upcoming ceremony for topping the GPI POY for 2022 & the GPI Mid-Major POY, while Cherish Andrews will get hers as the GPI Female POY for 2022.

The GPA has introduced three new categories this time – Best Comeback Player, Rising Star in Content Creation & Fave Live Stream.

In the Best Comeback Player category, voters will choose from a list of star players ranked outside the GPI POY Top 1,000 in any of the three previous points-counting seasons (2018, 2019, 2022).

The Rising Star in Content Creation will celebrate new content creators making a buzz in the poker community.

The GPI Fans Choice Awards will feature four categories this year, including the newly established Fave Live Stream Award. The award celebrates all talented people working in front and behind the scenes in the live poker streaming world. Poker fans will also get to vote for three returning categories: Best Hand, Poker Personality, & Best Trophy.

Other returning categories include the famous GPI Players Choice trophy, as voted by the GPI Top 100 ranked players (as of January 4), Poker ICON, Final Table Performance, and Best Vlogger and Streamer.

The voting panelists received their Preliminary Round ballots yesterday, with the Final Round of voting scheduled to begin on January 29.

The Nominees for the 2022 GPA are expected to be announced on February 2.

GPA: A Lookback

The Global Poker Awards were instituted in April 2019 by the GPI, with PokerStars as the title sponsor. A total of 19 awards were given away. Power couple Kristen Bicknell (GPI Female POY) and Alex Foxen (GPI POY) won the first set of awards.

The second annual GPA ceremony was hosted in March 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic caused a worldwide crisis. Audiences worldwide tuned in to watch the proceedings for free on Poker Central’s streaming platform PokerGO, where 25 awards were given to select achievers from the poker industry. Power couple Bicknell and Foxen won the GPI POY awards for a second year running in their respective categories.

After a two-year hiatus, GPA returned for its third edition on February 18, 2021. Hosted by Jeff Platt and Drea Renee at the PokerGO Studio, the awards show saw some of the most notable names in the poker industry being recognized for their achievements. Ali Imsirovic (GPI POY), Nadya Magnus (GPI Female POY), and David Mzareulov (GPI Mid-Major POY) won the first set of awards.
