The VND 15 Billion (₹4.66 Crores) GTD World Poker Tour (WPT) Vietnam Main Event ran from September 6 to 11, registering 373 entries and collecting a record-breaking VND 18,090,500,000 (₹5.62 Crores) prize pool! New Zealand’s Hamish Crawshaw was the last man standing in what turned out to become the largest poker tournament to be hosted in Vietnam and in the process won his first-ever WPT title, along with an impressive VND 3,782,723,000 payday.
Crawshaw was an unstoppable force on the final day as he single-handedly took out all his five opponents to clinch the Main Event title. Ranked ninth on New Zealand’s All-Time Money List, Crawshaw’s present live tournament winnings have crossed the $700K-mark!
A total of 20 Indians had made it through to Day 2 of the Main Event with Rubin Labroo leading the group with a stack of 188,000. 15 Indian fell short of crossing the money line, and only five among them advanced to Day 3 with PokerStars India Team pro Aditya Agarwal holding the second largest stack of 1,137,000.
Crossing the money line on Day 3 were four Indians, namely, Jaideep Sajwan, Rubin Labroo, Sumit Sapra, and Alok Birewar. Though Agarwal and Sajwan were both among the top ten stacks at the start of Day 3, both pros had a rather swingy day on the felts, with Sajwan ultimately becoming the last Indian to perish on Day 3, finishing 13th for VND 267,739,000 (₹8.30 Lakhs). Agarwal was the lone Indian to reach the final table and eventually make it to the final day, placed fifth among six finalists with 1,205,000 in chips. Sadly, the poker maestro couldn’t carry on the fight for much longer, and Agarwal’s trailblazing run finally came to an end in fifth place for VND 861,108,000 (₹26.52 Lakhs).

The final table kicked off on Day 3 with Huynh Tan Dung (6,005,000) as the chip leader. Following the eliminations of Tung Nguyen (7th for VND 596,986,000), Nguyen Van Dung (8th for VND 488,081,000) and Nguyen Nam Duong (9th for VND 378,272,000), the play was halted for the day. Dung maintained his chip lead as he headlined the six finalists to the final day, though his stack was reduced to 5,265,000.

The first player to be eliminated on the final day was David Erquiaga. He pitted his against Hamish Crawshaw’s which bettered to a rivered full house to knock Erquiaga out in sixth place.
Less than 10 minutes later, PokerStars India Team pro Aditya Agarwal shoved all-in from the big blind for about 1,575,000 and Crawshaw called from the button.

The board ran out , and Crawshaw hit a full house on the river, eliminating Agarwal in fifth place.
Down to four-handed play, Chen Da Jia became Crawshaw’s next victim. Jia jammed from the button with , and Crawshaw called from the small blind holding . The runout missed both players and Crawshaw raked in the pot with his ace kicker. Jia walked out in fourth place.
At the start of level 29, Michael Seymour’s ran into Crawshaw’s which flopped a pair of queens, busting Seymour in third place.
The heads-up battle between Hamish Crawshaw (9,200,000 – 92 BBs) and Huynh Tan Dung (5,725,000 – 57 BBs) began with the former enjoying a sizeable lead over Dung. The final showdown lasted for nearly four hours, and Dung fought tooth and nail to close the chip deficit. While he did come close to tying with Crawshaw, in the end, it was the Kiwi pro who clinched the title.
On the final hand, Dung moved all-in for 1,975,000 holding and Crawshaw called with . The community cards spread out , and Crawshaw found three-of-a-kind nines on the board, relegating Dung to the runner-up spot. Crawshaw claimed his career-first WPT title, along VND 3,782,723,000 in top prize!
