If you love heist movies, then this latest news coming from South Korea is sure to pique your interest. What can only be described as a plot from the writers of the movie ‘Ocean’s Eleven,’ the Landing Casino at Jeju Shinhwa World reportedly has almost $13 Million in cash missing since last week.

What happened?

According to various reports, Landing International Development Ltd confessed to investors that an employee had apparently made off with over ₩14.5 Billion (US$13.4 Million) in cash from one of South Korea’s largest integrated resorts. Landing Casino discovered the money was missing on Monday, January 4.

Who did it?

The casino has asked the police to track down a 55-year-old female Malaysian employee the company suspects of being behind the heist. The unidentified staffer apparently didn’t return to work after the holidays, and her whereabouts are currently a mystery.

According to the reports published by the Yonhap agency, police secured surveillance camera footage from the casino, but the video around the time the cash may have disappeared was erased.

What do the police suspect?

The authorities suspect that at least two or three more people are involved in planning and executing this large-scale theft since the missing cash is too heavy for one person to carry. The report further added that experts suspect if all the stolen cash were 50,000-won bills, the number of currency sheets amounts to 2,91,200. It is further estimated that as many as 12.1 apple crates are needed to carry that kind of cash around and all the banknotes weigh more than 280 kilograms.

The police investigators added that they are leaving all possibilities open because it is difficult to transport the massive amount of cash out of the country through airports or ports alone, reported the news agency.

What has happened so far?

As per the latest development, on January 15, authorities announced they had recovered ₩12 Billion (US$10.9 Million) in cash from two locations. While ₩8.15 Million was retrieved from the Jeju casino’s VIP room safe, approximately ₩4 Billion was discovered in a place where the female suspect used to live.

“All the retrieved money is cash in new 50,000-won bills,” a police representative said. “The possibility of other accomplices being involved in the theft cannot be ruled out.”

Police have identified a “30-something Chinese national” as one accomplice with both he and the Malaysian executive believed to have left the country.

What have been the repercussions of this theft?

Following the theft discovery, the casino’s shares in Hong Kong plunged 7.6% to a record low on January 11, before rebounding 6.4% the next day.

At present, the police are still investigating the matter.
