Michael Newman Ships 2017 Rock ‘n’ Roll Poker Open $3,500 Main Event For $374,240 at Seminole

It was a star-studded final table at the 2017 Rock ‘n’ Roll Poker Open $3,500 Main Event, Seminole Hard Rock featuring the likes of Tom Marchese, Shaun Deeb and Ari Engel. However, besting all the pros was 48-year-old recreational player Michael Newman (cover image) who shipped the event to win the title along with $374,240 in prize money. With this score, Newman has doubled his career live cashes.

The event drew a strong field of 585 leaving the $2 million guarantee short by almost $130,000. A few notables who managed to cash but couldn’t reach the ten-handed final table include Joe McKeehen (13th for $24,920),David Peters (18th for $20,820), Faraz Jaka (28th for $10,260), and Curt Kohlberg (25th for $12,400).

Feared high roller specialist Dan Colman made the final table with one of the shorter stacks and bowed out first in 10th place. He moved all-in with and Ari Engel called off with a better .

Two-time bracelet winner Shaun Deeb started with one of the strongest stacks but lost a big pot to become short and exited shortly thereafter. He shoved with and got the call from Engel who tabled pocket queens once again to win the pot.

Joao Simao (eighth place) and Denis Cyr (seventh place) were the next two eliminations before Tom Marchese bowed out at sixth place after running his into Darryll Fish’s pocket aces.

Ari Engel who was looking strong in the early part of the final table, went out next after running his pocket eights into Sheddy Siddiqui’s jacks.

Incidentally, Siddiqui was out next. The hand in question saw Newman opening with and he got the call from Siddiqui who held . Siddique flopped top pair on the flop and check-shoved only to get the bad news when Newman tabled his pocket rockets .

Darryll Fish was trying to make some moves but failed and exited next. He shoved his short stack with and Newman won the pot with after flopping a pair of kings. With that, the heads-up battle between Newman and Matas Cimbolas was set with Newman leading with a massive 5-1 chip advantage.

The last hand of the event saw Cimbolas moving all-in with and Newman decided to gamble, calling with . Cimbolas was looking in good shape until Newman rivered a pair on the board to win the title.

Post his epic win, Newman said, “I always like a challenge and I always want to be playing against the best. That was the best of the best. It was absolutely amazing.”
