Taking direct action, objectors of the BJP government’s casino stand have moved the Goa High Court, which issued a notice to the latter on July 5, stating that a new casino license not be granted to a 5-star hotel.
The complaint was first filed by the NGO, GenNext with the Home department, but no action was taken. Durgadas Kamat, Chairman, GenNext informed that thereafter, “we have moved the court to stop the activity. A new structure has been put up, and in its support, the town and country planning department has issued a technical order. This order is being challenged.”
Kamat alleged that the NGO’s objection was towards a new structure for a casino, being built by the hotel. He further stated that the BJP administration was about to grant a license, accusing the government of a pro-casino stance.
The BJP has been continually facing flak from opposition parties and organizations for favoring a casino culture, and for reneging on its pre-election promise of removing casinos from the state.
