We usually start this weekly report with an update on the annual leaderboard standings, but Mohammad Azhar has forced us to digress this time. The 23-year-old bulldozed his way through the National Poker Series (NPS), picking up two NPS Gold Medals in the run-up to the grand finale on Sunday, where he championed the ₹3 Crore GTD NPS Main Event for a career-defining ₹50.13 Lakhs. By the time the NPS was over, Azhar had already broken into the 1 Crore Club” as far as lifetime profits go, in the process topping both the weekly and monthly leaderboard standings.

When Azhar started playing at the inaugural National Poker Series (NPS), his chief goal was to “fill his poker quota” before getting down to some serious study for CAT exams. If Azhar’s phenomenal run has made him the talk of the poker town, it has also pushed him to the top of the weekly charts. Not happy with all the stardust he has collected, Azhar went on to champion Spartan Poker`s The Elite on Friday, further consolidating his position as the indisputable weekly topper with ₹59.27 Lakhs in cumulative winnings and a jaw-dropping ₹53.86 Lakhs in weekly profits!

The NPS Main Event runner-up Ashwani Vishwakarma and PokerGuru Ambassador Kartik Ved take up the #2 and the #3 spots on the weekly leaderboards.

The inaugural NPS will be best remembered for Mohammad Azhar`s unstoppable run. Azhar did amazingly well to win an incredible three NPS Gold Medals; while topping both the NPS Series Leaderboard and the NPS Podium Leaderboard standings. In all, Azhar FT-ed a fantastic 14 events in June, posting an outstanding ₹78.65 Lakhs in recorded winnings through the month (₹62.02 Lakhs in profits)! Over ₹72 Lakhs of that came from his unmatched run at the NPS – that Sunday score getting him past PokerGuru Ambassador Ankit Wadhawan at the top of the monthly leaderboard standings. The Chandigarh-based Wadhawan was the #1 ranked player of June last week but closed out the month ranked #2. Nevertheles, with victories in the NPS Deepstack Championship, Adda52 Millions, and a career-best runner-up finish in the NPS Super Highroller, Wadhawan has broken new ground and profited a whopping ₹37.18 Lakhs for his efforts! The reigning annual leaderboard topper Manish Lakhotia rounds out the top three in the June rankings.

The Siliguri-based pro has run well over the month. While the race between him and PokerGuru Ambassador Laksh Pal Singh over the #1 spot on the annual leaderboard has gone on for months, Lakhotia earned a whopping ₹55.41 Lakhs in June and did enough to retain his place at #1 for a third consecutive week. The top order on the annual leaderboard witnessed a significant shakeup with Young Gun Gaurav Sood climbing up to the #2 spot, pushing PokerGuru Ambassador Laksh Pal Singh down to #3 in the rankings. Gaurav Sood earned ₹13.59 Lakhs through the week, all of it on Sunday, improving his annual winnings to ₹2.31 Crores. He is also the first player on our tracked database to cross the ₹9 Crore milestone in lifetime online winnings.

Laksh Pal Singh was the only player sitting on over ₹1 Crore in profits for the year, but that changed this week with Gaurav Sood and Kartik Ved joining him as ₹1 Crore-plus profit earners.

PokerGuru Ambassadors continue to dominate the annual leaderboard with four players from the team in the top six.

Three NPS Gold Medals – the ₹3 Crores GTD NPS Main Event title – the NPS Series & Podium Leaderboard topper. Mohammad Azhar walked away with all the glitter and fanfare this week.

It all came together for Azhar on Sunday, where he found himself in the company of relatively less experienced players on the NPS Main Event final table. He mustered the courage to refuse the three-way deal and ended up winning the title convincingly, banking a career-best ₹50.13 Lakhs.

We would have assumed Azhar would take time off the felts to cool off after the hectic NPS grind. However, the young CAT aspirant was back on the grind on Friday and displaying the sharp skills we have seen from him this past fortnight, Azhar took down Spartan Poker`s The Elite, adding ₹6.66 Lakhs to his kitty.

Azhar won a mind-blowing ₹59.26 Lakhs through the week, booking a commendable ₹53.86 Lakhs in profits.
