Daniel Negreanu (cover image) is arguably one of the most well-known poker players in the world. But the six-time bracelet champion hasn`t won a single title since 2013, a fact he changed on Wednesday when he took down Event #7: $50K NLHE of the 2021 PokerGO Cup.

Negreanu entered the final day`s play third in chips among five finalists and single-handedly eliminated all four of his opponents, eventually defeating David Coleman heads-up to clinch the title. With the victory, Negreanu added $700,000 to his live tournament winnings that have now reached $43.06 Million.

After the win, Negreanu said, “If I look at my results since 2013, I’ve cashed for $20 to $30 million, so I’ve still been able to post wins in terms of finances, but the elusive top prize has been missing. I’ve been a bridesmaid so many times. Just the demons and the ghosts in your brain, like when I’m heads up with [David Coleman] and that three hit the turn, it was just every reminder, like Buckner back in Shea Stadium. Every possible bad thing I’m thinking in my head. I can’t help it. I’m human. So to get that win out of the way, it feels like I don’t have to think about that anymore.”

He added – “I think my game is better than it’s ever been. I feel like I’ve competed well all week…I had a bubble, I had two min-cashes, and then I had this one. I feel like I’ve been in there. I have the utmost respect for my opponents and how good they are. I do believe it’s the best learning ground, too – watching what the top players do, the Ali Imsirovic’s, the Jake Schindler’s, and Alex Foxen – there are so many great players here.”

PokerGO tweeted the results.

The win is Negreanu’s seventh PokerGO Tour cash. It is also his third ITM finish at the PokerGO Cup series, adding to his eight-place finish at Event #3: $10K NLHE and sixth-place score in Event #5: $25K NLHE. It has catapulted him to the #2 spot on the PokerGO Cup Leaderboard with 470 points, behind Ali Imsirovic, whose fifth-place finish in the event boosted his leaderboard tally to 497 points.

Negreanu was back in the thick of the action in Event #8: $100K NLHE, where he is second in chips on the final table. The tournament opened to action yesterday and registered 23 players to create a $2.3 Million prize pool. Play halted with the formation of the five-handed final table led by Sam Soverel (2,225,000), with Negreanu (735,000) and Dan Smith (690,000) close on his coattails.

Final Table Recap

All five finalists had made final table appearances at the series earlier. Ali Imsirovic, the current PokerGO Tour and series leaderboard topper may have entered the final table as the chip leader with 73 big blinds. Still, he was the first to fall out after running his pocket tens into Negreanu’s pocket aces that improved to a full house.

Negreanu then sent Sergi Reixach and Alex Foxen packing to set up his heads-up duel with David Coleman.

Even after scoring the three eliminations, Negreanu came into the heads-up match as the shorter of the two stacks with 2.3 Million versus Coleman’s 2.95 Million. The heads-up proved challenging, but Negreanu eventually clinched the title, all with a dramatic ending. Coleman’s pocket fives were pitted against Negreanu’s king-ten, who missed the flop and the turn but spiked a ten on the final street to score the win!
