In this edition of PokerGuru 3-Bet, we highlight the latest updates from the World Poker Tour (WPT) front. In our first story, we have Art Papazyan receiving the honor of WPT Player of the Year 2018 and Pete Chen being awarded with the WPT Asia-Pacific Player of the Year Award. In our next update we unveil the first half of the schedule for Season XVII of WPT tournaments.
In our final update we bring news of renowned hockey commentator Mark Shunock joining the WPT as its tournament emcee. With Shunock’s appointment WPT looks to further its missive of ‘sportifying poker’.
With Matt Waxman winning the Season XVI, World Poker Tour (WPT) Tournament of Champions, the year-round run of WPT tournaments that were held at various stops came to a close. Amid the Season’s honors and titles, Art Papazyan was awarded the WPT Player of the Year 2018 title, while Pete Chen won the WPT Asia-Pacific Player of the Year Award.
Papazyan joins the likes of Daniel Negreanu and Bertrand Grospellier who have held the distinction earlier.
It’s really nice. I wasn’t planning on playing more tournaments. I’ll have to play more because of the perks that come with winning player of the year”, he said.
For Papazyan who topped the points accumulated through various WPT events this year, earned a total $1,064,173 in his WPT cashes and 2,450 POY points over this period. He climbed over other top contenders including WSOP 2015 Main Event champion Joe McKeehen, who came second in terms of earnings with $588,570 in cashes and 2,350 POY points.
For Chen the competition was smaller, with points calculated over five events only. Chen had bagged the WPT Beijing in April 2017 and followed to cash three side events in WPT Korea and also, WPT India.
I‘m happy but it’s not a big competition. I want to be a really good player. I want to be something special. If I get lucky and bink something, my goal will be WSOP Player of the Year. I think you should always have a goal that’s not easy to get,” Chen said, on the honor.
The World Poker Tour (WPT) has come out with the first half of the schedule for Season XVII with eight WPT Main Tour stops to be hosted this calendar year.
“As the WPT closes out a historic 16th season, the World Poker Tour is proud to announce the 2018 leg of the Season XVII schedule,” said WPT CEO Adam Pliska.
The eight main stops start in July with the WPT Gardens Poker Festival followed by WPT Choctaw, WPT500 Los Angeles, WPT Borgata Poker Open, WPT Maryland at Live! Casino, WPT bestbest Bounty Scramble, WPT Seminole Rock N Roll Poker Open and finally the WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic in December.
He has been the voice of commentating for many Vegas Golden Knights Hockey teams. And now, as the national hockey league team from Las Vegas prepared for the Stanley Cup, inner-rink announcer Mark Shunock has taken the leap towards poker. Shunock has joined the World Poker Tour (WPT) banner for tournament commentating.
I’m an entertainer, and if I can bring a slice of excitement to a live poker tournament, then that’s great, I’ve done my job”, Shunock said. “WPT saw me at the hockey game and said, ‘we need your energy at our poker tournament.”
WPT was the first poker tour to get the game televised in 2002 and has marketed poker events with a distinct effort to ‘sportify poker’. With his background in sports commentating, Shunock is expected to be a force multiplier in the WPT team.
Shunock’s first show for WPT was the WPT Tournament of Champions hosted in Esports Arena in Las Vegas, where the commentator who began his career as a Broadway actor got the crowed charged with his signature crowd-hype style of presentation, that includes a live band!
