Poker in India just got a marvelous fillip with Aditya Agarwal (cover image), the first chosen PokerStars India Team Pro recently. Aditya has been the mainstay face of Indian poker and his decade old poker journey accounts for some amazing scores. Starting out in poker as an undergrad in America, Aditya has spent the years gaining experience after experience at several worldwide tournaments, besides a continuous online participation. He not only plays the game, but also has earned the respect of many across the international circuit for an unmatched dedication to the game.

Aditya has shared his immense knowledge with a number of aspiring players and has become the poker-ideal for many a newcomer.

It was a poker-packed 2014 for him, which culminated with the well-deserved PokerStars endorsement.

PokerGuru caught Aditya for an exclusive chat about this latest development. Aditya shares with us, his feelings on becoming a PokerStars Team Pro, the coming future and about poker in India.

Hi Aditya, congratulations on becoming India`s first pro for PokerStars! How does it feel?

It feels awesome, I am really excited to get this opportunity, which is a dream come true for any professional poker player. I am overwhelmed by the response it has gotten and I hope I can make everyone proud and represent PokerStars and India well on the Asian and International circuit.

A PokerStars sponsorship is one of the most prestigious achievements for a poker pro. How do you think this affects your poker career?

Getting a sponsorship obviously helps a lot. This year I will be travelling to all the Asian PokerStars tournaments along with Aussie Millions and WSOP. It’s going to be a busy year and would like to make full use of this opportunity and win a big live tournament. It’s definitely an exciting time for me in my poker career and I look forward to what’s in store in the coming months.

So what are your plans now, will you be playing more live events this year? What are the events you are looking to play in 2015?

Plan is to play all the PokerStars Asia tournaments (APPT, MPC and ACOP) along with Aussie Millions and WSOP. Along with the online schedule, it looks like it’s going to be a busy year in poker for me.

We also hear that you will no longer be playing under your online alias ‘intervention’ and are now playing on the id ‘Adi Agarwal’. How do you feel about this change?

Yes, I will be playing under my real name Adi Agarwal. ‘Intervention’ has been my screen name since I started playing on PokerStars in 2004, so it`s a kind of bitter sweet feeling since that has been my identity for a long time, but this is definitely a step forward so I am fine with letting go.

As a Team PokerStars Pro what will be some of your major contractual commitments? Which are the online tournaments you are confirmed to play?

I will be representing PokerStars in live tournaments and online. Being an ambassador for poker in India and to inform people and get them to play the game would be one of my major goals while representing PokerStars.

I will be playing all the big series such as TCOOP, SCOOP and WCOOP along with normal MTT (multi-table tournaments) schedule whenever I am not playing live cash or live tournaments.

You are known as a MTT specialist; but recently in a blog, you mentioned about playing & doing good in live cash games. Will we see you now at PokerStars online cash tables as well?

Now that I have started playing more cash games, I definitely see myself playing some online cash as well. Before I was primarily a tournament player so never really got into cash, but cash games have definitely become a big part of my game now.

You have been an integral part of the Indian poker circuit. What is your outlook on the poker scene in India? When do you think the ‘Moneymaker’ kind of poker boom will happen here?

Poker is come leaps and bounds in India. With 14 poker clubs in Bangalore alone, the popularity of poker in the country is surely rising. “Moneymaker” kind of boom is just waiting to happen, we just need to get poker on TV and BOOOOM, poker could well be the biggest thing in India!

Will you be also a part/active contributor to PokerStars School online?

I have always enjoyed coaching/mentoring up comers and look forward to working with the online PokerStars School in the future.

With this nomination, Aditya has redefined the Indian poker image and has staked our claim on the global poker scene. It seems almost serendipity that Aditya’s nomination has come at a time, when India is facing a resurgence of poker in terms of tournaments and an increasing number of local players scoring well at international events. Clearly, Aditya has pioneered a path that will be remembered in the annals of poker history, by those who trod it.

Here is looking to more glories coming from Aditya and a wonderful poker-year ahead for India!
