Sardi’s, the iconic eating haunt for Theater actors and celebrities in the Theatre district of Manhattan New York recently had a great poker tournament going on for Broadway theater personalities and fans. On May 14, a good crowd of performers, directors and other biggies from Broadway and the Theater world walked in to participate in the 4th annual Broadway Poker Tournament, the proceeds of which will be going to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, a charity setup. Poker pros Maria Konnikova and Andy Frankerberger were also present.
Amid those from the theater celebrity circuit, Billy Crudup, Richard Kind, Steve Martin, Tony Yazbeck, Kyle Selig, Josh Charles, Michael Cera, Brian Koppelman, Toby Leonard Moore, Rick Younger and Justin Sargent joined the action.
Texas Hold ‘em Poker was the game of the evening and there were 26 poker tables with 258 card players! At the final table the game was played between 10 players. The bets went quite high and the show ended with a crazy $295,100 collected in just one evening! This is higher than the previous year’s collection of $286,900.
(Broadway Theater celebrities and fans join the fun at 4th Annual Broadway Poker Tournament at Sardi’s)
The Broadway poker tourney is quite a thing in theater circles and every year we see performers join in to play as a way to contribute to a good cause. This year’s tournament had a big line up of corporate and business, ‘full house’, ‘two pair’ and ‘royal flush bar’ sponsors. Quite an interesting tag for the sponsors we must say!
A shout out also, to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS that has been actively coming up with innovative ways to raise money since the past 50 years.
The 12-time world-boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. may have retired from the boxing ring but certainly not from poker. Mayweather who’s known as ‘Money’ in the boxing world for his astounding money wins on the boxing ring just added another score this time at poker!
Mayweather is reported to have won a $101,250 jackpot after he started playing on ‘Ten Play Draw Poker’, a high-stakes video poker machine. Mayweather played $25 hands from a $20,000 buy-in and took his scores to $101,250! The boxer recorded a video of the poker session and uploaded it to post his win.
We have to say that ‘Money’ has been living up to his moniker, even after he’s left professional boxing! He is an avid poker player and has quite a fan following in the poker circuit apart from the boxing world. The effervescent boxer has often been associated with eye-popping news as well. The Australian government denied him a visa in 2015 for a promotional tour due to his background of ‘domestic violence’.
This has certainly not dampened his spirits for sure. In a boxing match that took place in Las Vegas in 2017, Mayweather famously defeated Conor McGregor landing $300 Million in his kitty! After his win, he was also challenged by WBO welterweight champion Jeff Horn and Mayweather’s fan on social media were out speculating for long, whether he’d take up the challenge or not. No, he didn’t!
Coming back to his recent jackpot win we’d say lady luck keeps smiling on Mayweather even as he romps on the poker felt with his charismatic abandon!
