It’s been some time since we brought some entertaining incidents and stories to your notice and with the international poker circuit always abuzz with the most exciting action, here we are! In this edition of our PokerGuru Gossip Column, we update you with four must-read stories that are doing the rounds.
First up we have the latest Vlog by poker superstar Daniel Negreanu where he announced his plans to have a baby. Next, we learn of how American pro Greg Merson lashed out at a waiter for serving him vodka instead of water.
We follow it up with how Sunday brought a shocker for online regulars at PokerStars who entered the site’s Sunday Million event, only to find themselves unable to connect! Similar technical glitches at partypoker had the twitterati talking even as competitor sites mocked on.
Finally, we wrap up our Gossip Column just as Gus Hansen wraps up his stay in Las Vegas after completing 652 hours at Bobby’s Room in 70 Days.
Daniel Negreanu may be one of the world’s most successful poker pros, but when it comes to personal relationships he’s been having quite a tough ride of late! After his shocking split with long time girlfriend Marissa Rachelle in the midst of World Series of Poker (WSOP) we’d have thought things would be quiet for a while. But not so! In an announcement that may throw many of his other poker fans off their chair, Negreanu has gone on to share his decision to have a child!
Negreanu brought the topic up in his latest Vlog titled ‘Operation Get Sexy: ‘Week 3 Grinding and Golf’ uploaded on August 13. The title certainly had us fooled, thinking it’d be all about gymming and poker.
“I’m having a kid!” Negreanu announced. “Can you believe that?” We don’t know if it’s a boy or a girl yet, we also don’t know who the mother is yet, because I haven’t found her. But we’ve made the decision this week that that’s going to be the plan going forward. We’re going to be looking for, not a baby mama, but..”
Negreanu admitted that over the past four years he was vehemently against getting married and having kids but that’s changed now. He also informed his fans he’d journal his reasons why he wanted to have a child and when it was going to happen.
Negreanu kept it vague on what he really meant, but it sounded like he was talking about seeking surrogacy for having a child. The fact that he used the word “We” has us wondering, since Negreanu hasn’t been linked with anyone after he parted ways with Rachelle.
So is there a new woman in his life, or has he made up with Rachelle after all? While Negreanu’s Vlog doesn’t give a clue on either, the poker super star looks to have made the biggest decision of his life!
Greg Merson, 2012 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event champion, recently found himself embroiled in an unpleasant situation. The American poker pro was at the Maryland restaurant Seacrets with a group of friends when a waiter, Jason McElwee, allegedly served him vodka when he ordered water.
While at Seacrets, Merson’s friends had asked for alcoholic beverages, but the bracelet winner had asked for water since he is a recovering alcoholic and has been sober for the last seven years. McElwee had jokingly asked him if he meant vodka, which is also a clear coloured drink, instead of water. After the waiter brought the drinks back to the table, Merson took a sip of his drink and realized that it wasn’t water. Merson informed McElwee that he is a recovering addict and didn’t appreciate being served alcohol. To which McElwee supposedly responded, “So?”
The indifferent and ignorant nature of the response apparently appalled Merson enough for him to launch a verbally-abusive rant at McElwee, ultimately leading to Merson’s removal from the restaurant’s premises.
In a tweet posted on August 11 Merson described the incident.
Was kicked out of @SeacretsUSA today for telling our waiter he served me alch(I’m nearly 7 years sober) when I asked for water and his response was “so?” I instantly cursed him out like most would and was given the insta boot. Long story posted below. Servers name was Jason pic.twitter.com/xPnfePwgfj

He even asked his fans on Twitter to help him find McElwee’s identity and out him on social media.

And he was successful in finding him as well.
WE HAVE FOUND OUR MAN!!! @mcelwee_24 ty social media and GFY you worthless scum. pic.twitter.com/Ml3fBHvBYn

A lot of people supported Merson and agreed that McElwee was in the wrong.
People saying like this “dox” is going to “destroy this guyslife”. Punishment should fit crime. Even if he got fired, which he might not, he’d surely find another job. What are you scared of, someone’s going to attack him physically for this???? Please, calm down cretins.

While others believed that the decision to out McElwee on social media was unfair since it could possibly lead to cyber harassment and bullying by Merson’s fans.
I would urge you to sit on this course of action for a day or 2. You’re basically trying to get this guy fired for being ignorant and oblivious. The guy clearly is in the wrong and owes you an apology, but idk if he deserves a social media mob harassing him.

However, the Main event champion defended his action by stating that McElwee “clearly deserves to lose his job.”
Regulars at PokerStars and partypoker were disappointed this week, with technical glitches on the portals taking the fun out of online tournaments. First, it was partypoker that suffered Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks on its server and then, PokerStars announced cancellation of its biggest weekly online MTT ‘Sunday Million’!
Players were not happy, and many took to social media demanding a refund.
partypoker faced one of its worst online onslaughts yet. The portal was first attacked last Saturday and then again on Thursday. As a result some ongoing tournaments had to be aborted midway.
Apologies for the technical difficulties, we are working to rectify, the site has been targeted with a DDoS attack from third parties. We hope to resume normal business very soon and will keep you updated. Thank you for your patience

Concerning the @partypoker issues tonight. Apologies for the technical difficulties, we are working to rectify, the site has been targeted with a DDoS attack from third parties. We hope to resume normal business very soon and will keep you updated. Thank you for your patience.

Understandably, many customers had issues with this.
The way you have failed to communicate these ongoing problems is unacceptable. It feels like you have no respect for your customers. I was in the middle of a tournament, as I’m sure thousands of others were. No word on compensation, when or how tournaments will resume.

i paid to enter five tournaments – 3 frozen completely for hours, then i totally lost connection for the rest of the day (UK time), so i’ve not been able to play any of the tournaments, yet have paid to play them [ CHARDONA2015 ]

If this wasn’t enough, the US-facing poker site Americas Cardroom openly mocked the troubles its competitor was facing!
Americas Cardroom has been hit by many DDoS attacks in recent months and the site on its Twitter handle stated, “US regulated poker sites are not exempt from DDOS attacks.”
Evidently poker podcaster Joe Ingram didn’t find it amusing, “you guys are complete jokes,” said Ingram, critical of America Cardroom’s comments.
Out at PokerStars, the Sunday Million opened with 5,504 players and around 9PM GMT, just when there were only 1,755 players remaining in the field, the tournament was put on hold. Majority of the players were unable to connect and players had to sit out through all tournaments running on the site. Eventually, all events were canceled, but not before those who had stayed logged in managing to amass a ton of chips!
End of the day, PokerStars did refund the buy-in amounts to all the 1,755 entrants but it was a Sunday shocker for sure!
Our technical issues have now been resolved. Apologies to all affected players. While some refunds were made in accordance with our cancellation policy (available here https://t.co/FZ0J6tgTkI) we will evaluate whether additional refunds are necessary following our review.

What a summer it has been for the Danish poker player Gus Hansen. Following the conclusion of the 2018 WSOP, Hansen stayed back at Sin City where according to him, he logged a total of 652 hours across a 70-day period playing the case games at Bobby’s Room at the Bellagio, meaning he played approximately 9.5 hours of poker each day on average.
Chronicling his 70 day stay in Vegas on Instagram, Hansen kept his followers on the social media site updated about his whereabouts.
Whether he was grinding at the felts or partying the night away, Hansen surely kept us all entertained.
At one point he literally lost the shirt off his back!
However, his time in Vegas had come to an end.
But in his own words, “It’s been a great summer.”
So folks, that’s all for this edition of PokerGuru Gossip Column! We will return soon with more exciting and juicy tidbits from the poker circuit, so stay tuned!
